Sein 1934 veröffentlichter Roman "Tender Is the Night" kritisiert die Mitglieder der in Europa lebenden amerikanischen Finanzaristokratie. Der Titel ist ein Zitat aus dem Gedicht "Ode an eine Nachtigall" von John Keats. Der Roman blieb jedoch zunächst ohne Erfolg. Fitzgerald verfiel darauf völlig: Er litt an Depressionen, trank, war überschuldet und konnte nicht mehr schreiben. Erst 1939 begann er seinen Hollywood-Roman "The Last Tycoon" um das Leben eines mächtigen Hollywood-Studiomanagers.
