Watts, Isaac (1674-1748): Doctrine of the Passions Explain'd and Improv'd: or, A brief and comprehensive Scheme of the Natural Affections of Mankind, attempted in a plain and easy Method;with an account of their Names, Nature, Appearances, Effects and different Uses in human Life: to which are subjoin'd Moral and Divine Rules for the Regulation or Government of them.
BOUND WITH
A Defence Against the Temptation to Self-Murther. Wherein the Criminal Nature and Guilt of it are display'd: The various Pretences for it are examin'd and answer'd: Seasonable Advice is proposed to those who are Tempted, and to those who have been delliver'd from this Temptation. Together with Some Reflections on Excess in Strong Liquors, Duelling, and other Practices akin to this henious [sic] Sin. Dublin: Printed by J. Jones for George Ewing ..., 1737. [2]+vii+[1]+100pp. A-D12, E1-[6]. With two title-pages: the first with The Doctrine of the Passions ... plus "To which is added" and a briefer version of the title given above; followed by a separate title-page for the essay on suicide. Though the suicide tract is separately paginated and foliated, the generic title-page is G12 of the first title, thus clearly establishing that the two works were in fact issued together, Dublin 1737
By I. Watts. D.D. The Third Edition Corrected and Enlarged. Dublin: Printed by R. Reilly, for G. Ewing, Bookseller, 1737. 2 vols bound in 1. [2]+vii+[3]+142pp. A-G12. 12mo. 18th century (Irish?) calf with red & dark green morocco spine labels and a separate red morocco label with the [owner's] legend "H:S"; edges tinted green. Some cracking to the joints, small section of calf erose at the upper front joint, closely cropped at the top margin (especially the second title), generally a very nice and attractive copy. Scarce. All 18th century editions are now very uncommon. This first Irish edition is also 1) the revised & enlarged third edition of the text, which first appeared in 1729 as the introduction to Watts's Discourses of the Love of God and the Use and Abuse of the Passions in Religion and which first appeared under this title in 1732; 2) so far as we can ascertain, the second appearance of Watts's essay on suicide in book form and (apparently) the only time it was issued with The Doctrine of the Passions. The essay on suicide was, we think, first published at least in part in the Gentleman's Magazine and then in London, 1726, by J. Clark & R. Hett. OCLC lists one copy of our 1737 Dublin edition (at Queen's Univ, Sci Libr), but with no indication that it appeared as a kind of appendix to the Discourse on Passion. Rieber Catalog #442 (1732 London edition); Rost Bibliographie des Selbstmords #367 [Defence Against ... Self-Murther, original 1726 London edition]. Weight: 6.0 ounces = 171 grams. Size: 6.5 x 4.0 x 0.8 inches = 16.2 x 10 x 2cm. HB

Nathan Johnstone: The Devil and Demonism in Early Modern England, Cambridge, UK Cambridge University Press 2006 ; fester Einband / hard cover; Schutzumschlag / dust cover; 1. Ed. ISBN: 9780521802369
9780521802369 Brand New
An original book examining the concept of the Devil in English culture between the Reformation and the end of the English Civil War. Nathan Johnstone looks at the ways in which beliefs about the nature of the Devil and his power in human affairs changed as a consequence of the Reformation, and its impact on religious, literary and political culture. He moves away from the established focus on demonology as a component of the belief in witchcraft and examines a wide range of religious and political milieux, such as practical divinity, the interiority of Puritan godliness, anti-popery, polemic and propaganda, and popular culture. The concept of the Devil which emerged from the Reformation had a profound impact on the beliefs and practices of committed Protestants, but it also influenced both the political debates of the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I, and in popular culture more widely. ° Focuses on a neglected yet fascinating area of early modern history ° Challenges traditional beliefs and conceptions about the Devil ° Examines demonology within the wider political, social, cultural and religious history of early modern England Contents Introduction; 1. The synagogue of Satan: anti-catholicism, false doctrine and the construction of contrariety; 2. Temptation: the protestant dynamic of diabolic agency and the resurgence of clerical mediation; 3. Satan and the godly in early modern England; 4. Incarnate devils: crime narratives, demonization and audience empathy; 5. 'What concord hath Christ with Belial': de facto satanism and the temptation of the body politic, 1570-1640; 6. 'Grand Pluto's progress through Great Britaine': the civil war and the zenith of satanic politics; 7. 'The Devil's Alpha and Omega': Temptation at the cutting edge of faith in the civil war and the interregnum. Printed Pages: 350. First Edition Brand New Hardcover 228 x 152 Mm; First Edition

VERTELLINGEN, ZEDELIJKE-. Een nuttig Prentenboekje. Schiedam, H.A.M. Roelants, (ca. 1860).
Strongly moralistic picture book for children, each plate showing two little scenes, one of children behaving well or badly and the other showing the fine reward or heavy punishment following. The text on the accompanying leaves, often also printed on one side, explains what has happened, with a two-line moral advice for title, like "Het is een slecht, boosaardig kind, Dat vreugd in 't dierenkwellen vindt" (It is a bad and malicious child, that finds pleasure in torturing animals). Here the plate shows first a boy bird-nesting, and underneath the same boy being thrown high trough the air by an elephant. The text explains that the boy had stuck with a needle in the elephant's trunk, and that the boy fell to his death. Another boy breaks his leg after having made fun of an invalid, and still another boy drowns because he did not listen to good advice. A woman has become a beggar because she was too slovenly and lazy, and a man has become a thief after being a sneak while a young boy. The good behaviour is also nicely rewarded, like a little brother and sister resisting the temptation of stealing fruit from a stranger's garden and being given some fine pears. Another wise lesson reads: "Gezondheid en een blij gemoed, zijn beter dan veel geld en goed" (Health and a happy disposition are much better than money and wealth). The plate here shows first a lonely boy with lots of toys as against a boy playing in the street with other children with a hoop.
Good copy.- (Some sl. traces of use).
