Pride and Prejudice as well as Helen Fielding's successful novel Bridget Jones's Diary deal with the role of women in their contemporary societies and the skills the accomplished woman should have. One might think that the concept of the accomplished woman is only relevant in the 19th century but Fielding's funny revised edition of the Pride and Prejudice subject has shown that this idea is still present nowadays. Since Austen's novel was published in 1813 almost two centuries have passed, the role of women in society has changed through the years because of the feminist movements beginning in the 1960s. Nowadays women are able to depend completely on their own. They are not longer inferior to men, they gained the right to vote in the early 20th century and are able to have successful careers. Nevertheless the concept of the accomplished woman seems to be still significant at the present time. Fielding manages to move the concept of the accomplished woman into the future and it seems to be more popular than ever. Bridget Jones embodies a woman of the 1990s that struggles with her role in society in a similar way Elizabeth Bennet did almost 200 years ago.

Seit Bridget Jones s Diary war nichts mehr wie es war; ein neuer kultureller Trend war geboren, ein neues Genre benannt: Chick Lit entwickelte sich zu einem bedeutenden Popkulturphänomen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werde ich mich mit diesem Thema beschäftigen und arbeite als zentralen Schwerpunkt die Geschlechterkonzepte in der britischen Populärliteratur heraus. Zunächst führt Kapitel 2 in das Thema ein, indem neben Begriffsentstehung und Definition eine Abgrenzung zum romance genre geschaffen wird. Auch inhaltliche und strukturelle Besonderheiten werden vorgestellt. Ein wesentliches Merkmal sind zudem die opponierenden Reaktionen, die Chick Lit hervorgerufen hat. Somit sind die für Chick Lit so typischen pastellfarbenen Cover1 ebenso allgegenwärtig wie vernichtende Kritiken aus highbrow -Literaturkreisen. Einige kritische Kernaussagen werden daher in Kapitel 2.1 zusammengetragen. Kapitel 2.2 wirft die Frage nach den Einflüssen auf das Genre auf. Gibt es etwas wie die Mütter desChick Lit, die Autorinnen in ihrem Schreiben inspirieren Ob dem so ist, soll Kapitel 2.2.1 klären, in dem anhand eines Vergleichs von Pride and Prejudice und Bridget Jones s Diary narrative Parallelen zwischen den zwei Werken herausgearbeitet werden. Somit bildet Kapitel 2 insgesamt eine Einführung in das Thema und die Basis für den Hauptteil. In Kapitel 3 werden dann die Geschlechterkonzepte genauer untersucht. Aufgrund der enormen Fülle von Sub-Genres, die sich inzwischen herauskristallisiert haben, konzentriert sich die Analyse hier auf das Weiblichkeitskonzept bei Bridget Jones s Diary, sowie nach einer Einführung in das männliche Äquivalent zu Chick Lit - Lad Lit, auf die Analyse der neuen Männlichkeit in Nick Hornbys High Fidelity. Die Tatsache, dass Helen Fielding und Nick Hornby die bekanntesten Vertreter ihres Genres in Großbritannien sind, hat diese Wahl untermauert. Ein wichtiger Aspekt ist, dass anhand der Analyse der Geschlechterkonzepte in den beiden ausgewählten Werken abschließend auch gezeigt werden soll, ob sich diese Konzepte letztlich auf die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft übertragen lassen.

In fact, there are about 200 years between both works but they are indeed comparable...
