Weaver, John 1673-1760. An Essay Towards an History of Dancing, [Subtitle]: In which the whole Art and its Various Excellencie are in some Measure explain'd. Containing The several Sorts of Dancing, Antique and Modern, Serious, Scenical, Grotesque, &c. with the Use of it as an Exercise, Qualification, Diversion, &c. London: Jacob Tonson, 1712.
First Edition of the first English history of the dance. De Moroda 2600. Niles & Leslie II p. 555. Malkin 128. Beaumont p. 185. Fletcher 19. RISM BVI p. 879 (2 copies only in the U.S.). OCLC 47642732 (2 copies only). Weaver established himself as a leading theatrical dancer in London in the early 18th century. He performed at both Drury Lane and Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre.
"Only in recent years has Weaver's importance in the development of the "ballet d'action" - scenical dancing, as Weaver called it - been fully appreciated. He predated Marie Salle and Jean Georges Noverre and was serious in his attempts to tell stories through dance. John Rich, the manager of Covent Garden Theatre (and, before 1732, Lincoln's Inn Fields) and an accomplished harlequin, popularized the pantomime in London, but John Weaver deserves more credit than is usually given him for developing the form, first with his early experiments based on commedia dell'arte and then with his attempts to create danced stories after the manner of the ancient Romans. His theoretical writings on dance are important contributions to the literature and show him very much a man of his time in his emphasis on the laws of nature as the basis for ideas on dance... In his Essay... he laid out his theory of theatrical dancing." Highfill et al., Vol. 15 p. 308.
