In original white card wrappers with Viks sandpaper covers, beautifully boxed. Cut-ups of text and images rendered in black. Asger Jorn's lithographed structures portantes in vivid colours. A first edition of a very rare book in excellent condition and commercially and institutionally uncommon with OCLC locating eight copies or so in accessible libraries. The warning on the title page "Cet ouvrage est entierement compose d'elements prefabriques' refers to the practice of 'detournement', developed by the Internationale Lettristes and adopted by the Situationists. The images and texts, even if not one sentence is the author's, evoke the days and nights of the radical margins in Paris in the early 1950's, where Guy Debord was to mark the history of film with 'Hurlements en faveur de Sade' in 1952, a film without images; where a group of not so recommendable youngsters decided to overthrow the world, an arragang ambition which would lead to May 1968, and much further. 'Detournement', reusing fragments of existing culture or publicity in a critical contaxt, is diametrically opposed to the later commercially succesful odes of op art to consumerism. Like Asger Jorn's colourful interventions are only reminders of Jockson Pollock's "drippings", which turned out to be too "aesthetic". (Asger Jorn. Werkverzeichnis Druckgrafik. München, 1976, no. 220). - This copy is, exceptionally, inscribed by Asger Jorn, Guy Debord and Jörgen Nash to a Swedish collector and his wife. Books inscribed by Debord are rare. Atkins 129. "The artists book was designed and produced by McCarthy and Rhoades in Los Angeles and consists of different parts which all have different formats: Roberto Ohrt's "Vier heulende Fassaden" (28 x 21,5 cm, Typoskript, 42 Seiten, broschiert) + a number of photographs stuck into a slightly distorted reprint of Guy-Ernest Debord's "Memoires, Structures Portantes d'Asger Jorn, edite par l'Internationale Situationiste" (43 x 14 cm, 58 Seiten, Faksimile) + a piece of red carpet (25 x 20 cm) used as a cover. Finally the entire book was wrapped in plastic, an artistic method frequently found in the work of Jason Rhoades. On the one hand the packaging protects the book, on the other hand, it transformes it into an art object." One of only 500 copies signed by both artists. Untouched copy. Excellent.
