The most handsome model in the entire collection is William Christian Miller, as photographed by both George Platt Lynes and Paul Cadmus. Miller was "so beautiful he stopped cars in the streets", and was the devoted George Platt Lynes' muse. Accompanied by a scholarly historical account of the development of the male photographic nude within its cultural context, each living subject is also shown as he looks at the time of the book's publication, as virile, handsome, and attractive as ever. The book's two fascinating sequels, while bringing the subject up-to-date, have not surpassed the sensuous beauty, impeccable scholarship, and sublime production values of this pioneering project. This title was an astonishing success, went into multiple subsequent printings, and a paperback edition.
