HUNTER, Dard.. PAPERMAKING IN INDO-CHINA..
An account of papermaking in Viet-Nam prior to the beginning of the war with the French. During the war, the hand made papermaking industry was virtually destroyed. This work is the recorded record of what that industry produced. Cottage based, this indigenous industry utilized Daphne bark. Very fascinating account of a now dead craft tradition. ** LIMITED EDITION NOTE: Note in a copy of this book which sold in a 1985 auction, contained a Hunter letter stating that the actual number of copies he did amounted to only 155 copies, rather than the projected 182 which were planned. Owing to the lack of ample paper samples, the total number was therefore reduced down. The last page of this work shows the colophon, hand numbered and signed in ink by Dard Hunter. * BIZZARE BUT TRUE STORY WHILE HUNTER RESEARCHED THIS BOOK: This book is printed on hand-made deckle edge paper, made in 1932 at Lime Rock, Connecticut by Dart Hunter. This extraordinary work covers the author's experiences during travels to Yen-Tha and Lang-Buoi. On the way his vehicle struck a young Tonkinese girl, knocking her from the roadway and killing her. This accident had a major effect on Hunter, who felt guilty for the girls lost life in his pursuit of the ancient paper-making villages of Tonkin, Indo-China [Old Vietnam]. The work was actually written in 1935, upon his return. Owing to the war with Japan, the book was postponed. * THE BINDING: The book was beautifully hand-bound by Peter Frank, in one quarter crushed red morocco, the boards were covered with Hunter's own hand-made paper, printed with gilt Buddha's, each of which shows a different Mudra with red Mandalas. The central Buddha decoration is also gilt Buddha, but done in large size, and is seated upon a green Lotus. This Buddhist theme was done after an ancient Chinese woodcut print. The book is 20 x 30 cm. in size. * There were two variations to this title. The first was hand bound by Peter Frank and did NOT come with a slipcase. The slip cased version was done later from the remaining unbound sheets and were hand-bound by Gray Parrott in his typical style of slipcase, which matched the red morocco leather binding. All copies had vellum corners, the other variant point, was the type of paper used, which was either complete in cream paper, or two-thirds cream with white for the b.w. plates paper; the preferred is the entire work in cream, and that is what we have here. * DARD HUNTER: Dard Hunter [1883-1966] came from a family of printers and publishers who began their work in Ohio in 1812. All of Dard Hunter's works are rare and costly; they were issued in very small and numbered editions, limited to the small number of paper samples and specimens, all copies were then personally signed by Dard Hunter. * ORIGIN OF PAPER: "It is recorded in ancient Chinese literature that paper was invented in 105 A.D., in Lei-Yang, Hunan Province in China by the eunuch Ts'ai Lun, a member of the Imperial Guard." See page 41 for this citation. * FASCINATING FOOT NOTE: There are photos of the three Daphne papermaking plants reproduced from the treatise by Dr. N. Wallich, Calcutta, 1820. * CONDITION: The book is bound as issued, with velum corners, the spine has a some darkened areas and minor rubbing to the head and tail, otherwise the contents are clean, bright as issued. * This is DARD HUNTER'S Rarest and most extraordinary of all his books. * Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. * * * BUY WITH * * * * SHIPPING: WE SHIP WORLD WIDE * * * * * The shipping costs displayed for our books on ZVAB are ONLY AN ESTIMATE !!! * ACTUAL costs are based book weight, destination and value. * We will inform you of shipping costs and options once you select the book. **FOREIGN: We usually ship by registered/insured airmail to customers abroad. **DOMESTIC: We ship to USA customers by UPS/FEDEX or U.S. MAIL, appropriate insurance/registry and signature required will appply. ***** Please inquire if you have any questions regarding shipping or payments .

HUNTER, Dard.. A MONOGRAPH RELATING TO THE FABRICATION OF PAPER & TIN FOIL & THE USE OF PAPER I.
A stunning and marvelous reference containing actual paper samples. The whole work was printed by hand by the celebrated paper scholar, author and prolific writer on hand-made paper, Dard Hunter. He was the author of numerous other rare and important books on hand-made papers relating to: Japan, Korea, Viet-nam, Siam, as well as others. Please inquire with us for other titles in stock. * CONTENTS: This work contains 48 real specimens of Chinese ceremonial papers, as well as the most beautiful gold & silver foil samples produced in China. The hand-painted joss, "Door," "Kitchen," and other "Gods" are done with the utmost care and attention to detail, all finely painted in polychrome. Its important to point out, that these "Door Gods" were replaced every New Year, the old ones were burned in a ritual, while the new ones were affixed to doors and door jams throughout the house, kitchen and other places. They did not survive, nor were the old ones ever kept as it was considered bad luck, so there are none which survive to this day except for a few found in this book or collected by foreigners. The paintings are exceptionally ornate, reflecting the large number of "Gods" respected and used for good luck and protection during the New Year. Mock money samples representing silver coins as well as a sample silver coin are tipped in. Several of the samples are large and folding, there are also 6 folding pages of text and illustrations. * There are two bamboo paper samples the first is dated from K'ang Hsi [1662-1723], the second is from Ch'ien Lung [1736-1796]. Both are "laid" papers and are from books of the period, one has Chinese characters and Manchurian the other only in Manchurian. These samples are tipped in and nicely described. * A fine suite of eight black & white photographs showing the process of Chinese paper-making as well as tools associated with the art are exhibited. Following also a substantial essay on the techniques of hand-made papers employed in China. * THE BINDING & EDITION: FIRST & ONLY LIMITED, EDITION OF 125 COPIES, SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE AUTHOR. This beautiful work was hand-bound by Peter Franck, the spine is red morocco with gold-stamped titles. The covers are covered boards printed from original woodblocks used in making wall decorations for the apartments of the last Emperor of China. The corners are in vellum, the text is printed on paper made by hand in the Orient from mulberry bark. * COLLATION: The work contains 9 photogravures, 2 specimens of old paper printed text, some 48 original ceremonial paper samples, spirit and related papers, 7 illustrations and other graphic plates. Some of the woodcut illustrations are large folding types and very impressive ! * CONDITION: The binding is very nice with minor and usual rubbing to the head/tail of spine, the vellum corners are bright and without any wear. The contents is clean, occasional offsetting which is usual for this work, otherwise a very condition. Some of the samples have minor tears, wrinkles again a common feature of this work. Still in very clean collector's condition. * This is truly one of Dard Hunter's most lavish and beautiful books on hand-made papers. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Dard Hunter: MY LIFE WITH PAPER * Dard Hunter: PAPERMAKING * Joesf Hejzlar: EARLY CHINESE GRAPHICS *[Yuen shih Pan]: SPECIAL EXHIBITION COLLECTORS' SHOW OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE WOODCUT PRINTS. * CHINESE POPULAR PRINTS: Leningrad 1988 * Shucun Wang: PAPER JOSS: Eeity Worship Through Folk Prints. * Clarance Day: CHINESE PEASANT CULTS: Being a Study of Chinese Paper Gods. * Schlosser 38 * Color scans can be sent by email.
