First edition of this important work on early printed and manuscript Americana, with a valuable introductory essay This anonymous work has in the past been ascribed variously to "[Alexander] Dalrymple, Homer, Long, and Reid" (Church), but is now known to have been written by the miscellaneous writer Leman Thomas Rede, a student of the Middle Temple (cf. Stuart C. Sherman The William and Mary Quarterly, 3rd Ser., Vol. 4, No. 3 (Jul., 1947), pp. 332-349). According to the title Rede compiled the work from the holdings of the British Museum "and the most celebrated public and private libraries, reviews, catalogues, &c.". It is of particular value as it includes manuscript material in addition to printed works, and also for the 17pp. "Introductory Discourse on the State of Literature in North and South America," which includes musings on the benefits of freedom of the press to the development of "Genius," as well as interesting details of bookselling in the United States. The demand was for small format works on practical matters; imported books were generally cheaper than home-produced editions (even with the hefty premiums that booksellers were able to place on the imports) because of the cost of materials and printers' wages. Aborigines sind kein einheitliches Volk, sondern bestehen aus Stämmen oder Clans mit oft höchst unterschiedlichen Gebräuchen und Sprachen: Je nach Definition und Quelle gab es vor der Ankunft der Weißen etwa 400 bis 700 verschiedene Stämme der Aborigines, die vorwiegend als Jäger und Sammler lebten. Mit der Ankunft der weißen Siedler ab 1788 sank die Zahl der Aborigines von geschätzten 300.000 bis 1 Million Einwohnern auf 60.000 im Jahr 1920, hauptsächlich wegen eingeschleppter Krankheiten, aber auch durch gewaltsame Konflikte mit den Siedlern um die Rechte an dem Land. Etwa drei Viertel der heute rund 464.000 Aborigines leben in Städten und haben sich weitgehend der Lebensweise der Weißen angepasst, da die Behörden in Australien jahrzehntelang eine Assimilations-Politik betrieben. Am ehesten sind die Traditionen der Aborigines im Northern Territory erhalten geblieben, wo die Europäer erst spät siedelten; dort leben sie in den meisten Orten unter sich, weswegen hier auch noch fast 60 % der Aborigines zu Hause eine indigene Sprache sprechen. Aborigines von der Bathurst-InselDas Wort aborigine (von lateinisch ab origine von Beginn an) bedeutet im Englischen allgemein Ureinwohner; es war ursprünglich die Bezeichnung für die Ureinwohner im Latium, einer Landschaft im frühen Italien. Als Bezeichnung speziell für die Ureinwohner Australiens wurde es erstmals 1803 schriftlich dokumentiert; inzwischen gilt Aborigines im Englischen als abwertend und wird durch Aboriginal ersetzt. Selber bezeichnen sich Aborigines meist in ihren jeweiligen Sprachen, zum Beispiel Koori im Südosten Australiens oder Anangu im Zentrum.
