FORSTER, Johan Georg Adam.
Second edition of the French translation of this travel account by (Johann) George (Adam) Forster (1754-1794), a descendant of a Yorkshire family who left England on the death of Charles I, and settled in Dantzig where George was born in 1754. In 1770 the family moved to London, where father Johann Reinholt was in the service of the East India Company. He was assisted by George who helped him to translate the narrative of Bougainville's voyage, published under the father's name in 1772. Reinhold Forster accompanied Cook on his second voyage, from 1772 till 1775, as naturalist, taking his son George with him as his assistant. In 1775, a few months before Cook's account of the voyage appeared, George already published his account of the voyage in English, which he also translated into the German (1779). In 1778 George had moved to Germany where he became professor at Kassel and later at Wilna. From 1788 till 1792 he was librarian at Mainz. It was from there that he in 1790 accompanied the famous Alexander von Humboldt on a three months' tour down the Rhine, and through Belgium and Holland, the account of which, in the form of letters to his friends, he afterwards published as Ansichten vom Niederrhein, perhaps the most popular of his many writings. The work was translated into French by the publisher Charles Pougens who also added extensive notes. The publishers decided also to add a third volume with Forster's letters written during his journey to England later in 1790, edited by M. Huber. This last volume is illustrated by a large map of Great Britain and 9 beautiful folding views of Westminster Cathedral, Windsor castle, St. Paul's, the House of the Lord Major of London, the London Stock exchange, Covent garden, the Hopital at Chelsea and at Greenwich and Hampton Court. In his letters Forster tells us much of the collections of art ('Wunderkammer'), manor houses and gardens he visits during his trips, giving very interesting details not found elsewhere.
Very good set uniformly bound in charming contemporary bindings.- (Two sides a little bit shaved).
Querard III, 168; Dictionary of Nat. Biography 20, pp. 15-6.
