Bernd Heine and Tania Kuteva: Language Contact and Grammatical Change, Cambridge, UK Cambridge University Press 2005 ; weicher Einband / soft cover; 1. Ed. ISBN: 0-521-60828-7

The phenomenon of language contact, and how it affects the structure of languages, has been of great interest to linguists in recent years. This pioneering new study looks at how grammatical forms and structures evolve when speakers of two languages come into contact, and offers an interesting new insight into the mechanism that induces people to transfer grammatical structures from one language to another. Drawing on findings from languages all over the world, Language Contact and Grammatical Change shows that the transfer of linguistic material across languages is quite regular and follows universal patterns of grammaticalization - contrary to previous claims that it is a fairly irregular process - and argues that internal and external explanations of language structure and change are in no way mutually exclusive. Engaging and informative, this book will be of great interest to sociolinguists, linguistic anthropologists, and all those working on grammaticalization, language contact, and language change. ° Gives a fresh insight into the effects of language contact on grammatical structures and forms. ° Draws on a wide range of languages from all over the world ° Looks at a variety of issues, such as grammaticalization theory, language contact, the principles of grammatical change, and universal vs. idiosyncratic human behaviour Contents 1. The framework; 2. On replicating use patterns; 3. Grammaticalization; 4. Typological change; 5. On linguistic areas; 6. Limits of replication; 7. Conclusions. Printed Pages: 326. Several decades of research into the archaeology of contact in North America have laid the foundations for the global exploration of the archaeology of European colonization. It is significant, however, that archaeologists, unlike historians and geographers, have yet to develop a global account of contact and its consequences. This edited work presents case studies from nations developed from British settlement so as to allow historical archaeologists to examine differences and similarities between the histories of modern colonial societies world-wide. Written by an international team of experts, the work shows that historical archaeologies can assume marvellously different and suggestive forms when examined from the periphery. Furthermore, the imperatives of the periphery could result in different perspectives on North American and European archaeological contexts. The work also examines the role of a global vision of the historical archaeology of colonialism in providing a new basis for the evolution of the 'nation'. Contents 1. The archaeology of contact in settler societies Tim Murray; Part I. Diverse Contacts and Consequences: 2. Rycroft: Textbook of Contact Dermatitis. Berlin Springer Verlag, 2001. ISBN: 354066842X
Verlagsmängelex., XX, 1114 pp. 218 figs., 109 in color, 134 tabs. Geb. The third edition of the Textbook of Contact Dermatitis is the most thorough coverage yet of every conceivable aspect of the modern-day management of contact dermatitis. Both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis are covered fully and clearly, special emphasis being given to occupational and environmental aspects, in addition to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The Textbook also covers epidemiology, the computerization of patch test data and patient information systems, non-invasive techniques for quantification of contact dermatitis, methods of skin testing other than patch testing, skin penetration, quantitative risk assessment, the histopathology and ultrastructure of both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, subjective reactions and medicolegal aspects. The editors and contributing authors are all leading practitioners in the field. They have thoroughly revised the original chapters that were retained, while adding a number of completely new chapters. Their expertise has thus enabled the compilation of a comprehensive, yet approachable, updated text, supplemented by a large number of illustrations, mostly in full colour, many tables and a useful index. The book will help the reader gain a better understanding of the theoretical basis of the subject, greater competence in everyday practice, and increased awareness of areas in which more clinical and laboratory research remains needed. Wriggers, Peter: IUTAM Symposium on Computational Methods in Contact Mechanics: Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Hannover, Germany, November 5-8, 2006 (IUTAM Bookseries) Springer-Verlag Gmbh, ISBN: 1402064047
leichte Lagerspuren Kurzbeschreibung\nThis book contains the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Hanover, Germany, in November 2006. Coverage includes new mathematical techniques, new discretization techniques, advanced applications of unilateral contact to masonry structures, decohesion analysis and tractive rolling of tires. The book provides a good overview of modern techniques and state-of-the-art discretizations schemes applied in contact mechanics. \n\nSynopsis\nThere is still room for research in computational contact mechanics, hence engineering analysis includes unilateral constraints when a detailed modelling of a problem is needed. Contact modelling within real structures includes e.g. rolling wheels, metal forming processes and car crash analysis, and is outcome of the increasing power of modern computers. Also, multi-physics modelling of thermo-mechanical or electro-mechanical contact and microscopic modelling are used in order to get a deeper insight into the mechanism of friction and wear. Moreover, new numerical simulation techniques were developed within the finite element or boundary element method yielding better discretization tools and more efficient algorithms for contact. However, up to now there exists no approach which solves all problems of the above mentioned areas in a robust and reliable way, hence investigations and developments are still needed. The aim of the symposium was to bring scientists together who work on the frontier of research in computational contact mechanics described above, or in closely related subjects.<p/>During the symposium 37 scientists presented their newest findings in the area of discretization techniques for contact, algorithms and interesting numerical simulations of contact problems. The symposium gave detailed insight in the newest development in the area of simulation techniques for contact problems. Topics treated included new mathematical techniques like multi-level approaches, new discretization techniques like the mortar-method, advanced applications of unilateral contact to masonry structures, decohesion analysis and tractive rolling of tires. The current volume provides a good overview of modern techniques and state-of-the-art discretizations schemes applied in contact mechanics, and will stimulate future collaboration in science related to computational contact mechanics and in the organization of minisymposia and workshops in the area contact mechanics. , ISBN-13: 9781402064043
