ROUSSEAU, JEAN-JACQUES, KELLY, CHRISTOPHER (EDITOR). Rousseau On Philosophy, Morality, And Religion. Dartmouth College Press, Hanover: 2007. ISBN: 1584656646

312 pages. An essential general reader and course adoption anthology. Brings together Rousseau's key published and unpublished (in English translation), writings on philosophy, morality, and religion. This comprehensive, tightly constructed anthology can easily stand alone or serve as an exceptional companion to Rousseau's First and Second Discourses and Social Contract. Readers will find herein the definitive translation of the key Essay on the Origin of Languages, rarer works such as the Four Letters to M. the Pr sident de MalesherbesNcontaining one of Rousseau's most important statements about his thought and its origin and developmentNand much more. Less well-known, less accessible, and frequently overlooked, these brilliant shorter pieces in many ways encapsulate Rousseau's thought more directly or more simply than do his longer works. Editor Chris Kelly's incisive preface and introduction neatly contextualize the eleven primary selections, and a Rousseau chronology and bibliography round out the collection. The Table of Contents of this book is as follows: Preface Chronology Introduction Bibliography Observations by Rousseau on the Reply Made to his Discourse - translated by Judith R. Bush and edited by Christopher Kelly Preface to Narcissus - translated and edited by Christopher Kelly Discourse on the Virtue Most Necessary for a Hero - translated and edited by Christopher Kelly Letter from J. J. Rousseau to M. Philopolis - translated and edited by Roger D. Masters and Christopher Kelly Letter from J. J. Rousseau to M. de Voltaire - translated and edited by Terence E. Marshall Fiction or Allegorical Fragment on Revelation -translated and edited by Christopher Kelly Moral Letters - translated and edited by Christopher Kelly Essay on the Origin of Languages - translated and edited by John T. Scott Four Letters to M. le Pr sident de Malesherbes - translated by Christopher Kelly and edited by Christopher Kelly and Peter G. Stillman Letter to Beaumont - translated by Christopher Kelly and edited by Christopher Kelly and Eve Grace Letter to Franqui res - translated and edited by Terence E. Marshall Editors' Notes Index. CHRISTOPHER KELLY is Professor of Political Science at Boston College and editor and primary translator of Dartmouth College Press's acclaimed Collected Writings of Rousseau. He is the author of Rousseau's Exemplary Life (1987) and Rousseau as Author (2003). "The works collected here are indispensable for understanding Rousseau's views on morality, religion, philosophy and their relation to one another. Christopher Kelly's thought-provoking introduction deftly identifies unifying threads among the disparate pieces. In brief, this new collection is a treasure."NRuth W. Grant, Professor of Political Science and Philosophy, Duke University Softcover. Brand new book.

Ofen, [und Groß-Wardein] : In der Paul Burian'schen Buchhandlung, 1819-1825. Contemporary boards with red letterpieces. 12 Volumes in 6 bindings. German text (gothic). Bindings show some wear on covers & boards. Inside very clean. Very good set. Rare. - First edition of the collected works of Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786), a German Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the renaissance of European Jews, Haskalah (the Jewish Enlightenment) is indebted. He was a creative and eclectic thinker whose writings on metaphysics and aesthetics, political theory and theology, together with his Jewish heritage, placed him at the focal point of the German Enlightenment for over three decades. While Mendelssohn found himself at home with a metaphysics derived from writings of Leibniz, Wolff, and Baumgarten, he was also one of his age's most accomplished literary critics. His highly regarded pieces on works of Homer and Aesop, Pope and Burke, Maupertuis and Rousseau to cite only a fraction of his numerous critical essays appeared in a series of journals that he co-edited with G. F. Lessing and Friedrich Nicolai. Dubbed "the Jewish Luther", Mendelssohn also contributed significantly to the life of the Jewish community and letters in Germany, campaigning for Jews' civil rights and translating the Pentateuch and the Psalms into German.
