' Undead Science ' examines the study of cold fusion, one of the most publicized scientific controversies of the late 20th century. In 1989 two Utah-based "discovererers" claimed to have developed an electrochemical process that porduced more energy than was required to initiate the process. Finding no other explanation, the researchers described their findings as some kind of nuclear reaction. If they were correct, an important new energy source would have been found. Objections surfaced quickly, and in the year that followed hundreds of scientists worldwide attempted to reproduce these results. Most, though not all, failed, and the controversy became increasingly antagonistic.By 1990, the promise of an energy revolution died as scientific opinion favored the skeptics. Nevertheless, many scientists continue to do research on cold fusion, an instance of what Bart Simon calls "undead science." Simon argues that in spite of widespread skepticism in the scientific community, there has been a continuous effort to make sense of the controversial phenomenon. Researchers in well-respected laboratories continue to produce new and rigorous work. In this manner, cold fusion research continues to exist long after the controversy has subsided, even though the existence of cold fusion is circumscribed by the widespread belief that the phenomenon is not real. The survival of cold fusion signals the need for a more complex understanding of the social dynamics of scientific knowledge making; the boundaries between experts, intermediaries, and the lay public; and the conceptualization of failure in the history of science and technology. First edition. 8vo. Cloth binding, 334 pp. The Fleischmann and Pons cold fusion effect. Cold fusion is a nuclear fusion reaction that has been reported to occur near room temperature and pressure using relatively simple devices. In nuclear fusion, two nuclei are forced to join together to form a heavier nucleus, and during that process, energy is released. Cold fusion is the popular term used to refer to what is properly called "low energy nuclear reactions" (LENR), part of the field of "condensed matter nuclear science" (CMNS).[1] Cold fusion was brought into popular consciousness by the controversy surrounding the Fleischmann-Pons experiment in March 1989. A 1989 panel organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) concluded there was no convincing evidence that useful sources of energy would result from the phenomena attributed to cold fusion, but was sympathetic to careful funding of additional research to resolve the controversy. A second DoE panel, convened in 2004, reached a similar conclusion. Ex-library with expected markings. Good in very good dustjacket, in new mylar cover. 188 pages, illustrated with line drawings. "Cold Fusion is the story of the unresolved controversy. it is a tale of scientific discovery and intrigue, of experience done around the world that continue to contradict each other, and of politics among scientists, universities, and the U.S. government. it is also the story of how cold fusion may yet prove to be the solution to many of the world's energy problems."
