Sherman, Cindy, [ Cindy Sherman ]: Cindy Sherman : The Complete Untitled Film Stills, New York, NY: Museum of Modern Art, 2003 ISBN: 0870705075
Photography

cloth boards with dust jacket 27.1 x 24.7 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unknown; offset-printed Catalogue raisonne of Cindy Sherman's "Untitled Film Stills," with introduction by Sherman. "Cindy Sherman's 'Untitled Film Stills,' a series of black-and-white photographs created between 1977 and 1980, is widely seen as one of the most original and influential achievements in recent art. Witty, provocative, and searching, this lively catalogue of female roles inspired by the movie touches a vital nerve in our culture. Sherman plays and stages all of the roles herself, with an acute eye for costume, setting, and pose - and with uncanny poise. As Andy Warhol said, 'She's good enough to be a real actress.' In 1995 The Museum of Modern Art purchased the entire series from the artist, preserving the work in its entirety. This book marks the first time that the entire series has been published as a unified work. Sherman has arranged the sequence of the pictures, and has written a personal essay about their making. To the original sixty-nine Film Stills she has also added a seventieth, from a roll of film that for some years was lost." -- publisher's statement. 164 pp. Fine. SIGNED by CINDY SHERMAN.

Sherman, Cindy, [ Cindy Sherman, Gabriele Schor ]: Cindy Sherman : The Early Works 1975 - 1977, Catalogue Raisonne Ostfildern, Germany: Hatje Cantz, 2012 ISBN: 9783775729819
Photography, Portrait

paper boards with dust jacket 28.5 x 23.1 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white & color; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed; Large-scale catalogue raisonne of works by Cindy Sherman dated 1975 - 1977. "For more than thirty years, Cindy Sherman (Born 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) has been visualizing a diverse range of role models and female identities. Even as a teenager, the artist loved to transform herself by dressing up. Contrary to popular view, the famous 'Untitled Film Stills' (1977 - 1980) are not her earliest works these were preceded by pictures that she took in Buffalo between 1975 and 1977. During these years, Sherman developed playing with disguises into an artistic concept, creating photographs that unite a remarkable number of theatrical elements and which have remained largely unknown until now. Using a variety of wigs, makeup, gestures, expressions, and costumes, Sherman reveals different social identities by playing various roles. Gabriele Schor, director of the collection SAMMLUNG VERBUND, worked closely with the artist to research the conceptual beginnings of Sherman's oeuvre, now presented in this catalogue raisonne. The book is a collaboration between Cindy Sherman, SAMMLUNG VERBUND, and Metro Pictures." -- publisher's statement. 375 pp. Fine. In publisher's shrink-wrap.
