Albert Tafel (1876-1935), Geologe. E. Brief mit U. Berlin-Charlottenburg, 28. Die anfangs von mir sehr gefürchtete Übung machte mir dann doch Spass und bekam mir fast zu gut [...]". - Von seinem Lehrer Ferdinand von Richthofen dazu ermuntert, an der China-Tibet-Expedition Wilhelm Filchners (1904/05) teilzunehmen, machte sich Tafel im Januar 1905 selbständig, "bereiste erstmals die Nord-Süd-Schlucht des Gelben Flusses, außerdem die Innere Mongolei, das Tsaidam-Becken, das Marco-Polo-Gebirge und die noch unbekannte Kehre des Hwang-Ho. 1907 trat er von Lan-tschou aus die Heimreise an. 1914 erhielt er eine Professur für Geographie an der TH Stuttgart und wurde zum Leiter einer deutschen Turfan-Expedition ernannt (beides wurde wegen des Ersten Weltkriegs nicht realisiert). Nach einem Einsatz an der Westfront 1915-18 einer Deutsch-Persischen Militärexpedition zugeteilt, nahm Tafel den Euphrat auf; die Karte wurde 1917/18 veröffentlicht" (DBE). Von 1918 bis 1928 war Tafel als leitender Arzt in niederländischen Diensten an Eingeboren-Krankenhäusern in Indonesien tätig; 1934 bereiste er noch einmal China. Zu seinen Veröffentlichungen zählen u. a. "Reise in China und Tibet 1905-08. Kartographische Ergebnisse. 1. Teil: China" (1912) und "Meine Tibet-Reise" (2 Bde., 1914). - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und mit kleinem Stecknadeldurchstich am linken oberen Rand. - Beiliegend ein Blatt mit zeitgen.
