Three novels in one volume. Undated, but Sunday School prize certificate and title page of first novel are dated 1909. Each novel is individually paginated. "The Sign of the Cross" is 158pp and is "the copyright edition". According to the title page it's a reprint of the edition published by Eveleigh Nash of London in 1909. And it includes a Preface by John Truron, Bishop of Truro, and a Table of Contents. <P> The second novel, "Pickwick Papers" is 222pp and is a copy of the "author's edition" as published by George Routledge and Sons Ltd, London. It is illustrated by Hablot K. Browne in b+w. and includes a Table of Contents. <P>And the third novel, "Hypatia" is a copy of the edition as published by George Routledge and Sons Ltd, London. It is 190pp and includes an unatributed Preface. <P> The book includes adverts for all sorts of things (Nash's Magazine, Glendenning's Beef and Malt Wine, Epps's Cocoa, and more) at the beginning of each title. <P> "It sounds like one of those books which were made by binding up 6[pence] reprints.... Usually the original covers are missing (alas). One firm who did this in Birmingham was the bookseller Combridge," according to John Spiers, who is currently putting together a book on small and/or short-lived publishers in England. <P> Covers (blue cloth with gothic titles and art nouveau floral decor to front board and spine) have edgewear, rubbing, bumped corners and some soiling. Textblock includes the aforementioned Prize Certificate and pages are very greatly tanned.
