Three prints have been trimmed, not damaging print or caption; first 5 and last prints disbound. "The New Governess," facing last print is taped in along hinge slight scuff to edge of print, where tape pulled away. Tape to front e.p. hinge, board separated from spine; all other prints still attached however loosely. Title page has signature of Charles Hargens, Jr. a famous painter of the Old West, written in fountain pen ink and his studio address in Philadelphia, ink offset to facing verso of half title page. About 5 pages have closed tears or small chips to lower edge, not harming print. White cloth backed spine, soiled, end bumped, paper bound beveled boards, brown lettering with charcoal head of Gibson Girl. Rubbing of edges, spotty soil and rubbing, illustration clean. First Edition. All illustrations clean and clear. This book would be good for it's prints, which would mount great, and still have the captioning. Book measures 17 x 11 oblong, not paginated.
First edition Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), Roxbury, Ma.; most well known for his illustrations of beautiful women from the first quarter of the 20th century. His portraits originally appeared in the books; The Education of Mr. Pipp and A Widow and Her Friends, during the 1890's, etc. The women were fashionably dressed and refined in manner. Colliers signed Gibson in 1904 to create similar illustrations for their magazine. The "Gibson Girl" created the ideal of an American lady at the time. A portfolio consisting of a title page, a list of plates, 4 pages printed in red on one side and 4 [of 6] full page plates by Charles Dana Gibson illustrating characters from Dicken's novels and short stories, all laid loose in a natural burlap portfolio with cotton ties and the title embossed in orange on the front cover. The covers are heavily soiled with wear to the corners. The portfolio is splitting along the joints of the spine. There is scattered foxing throughout with creases and minor chips and tears to the edges of the leaves. Lacking 2 plates. The 4 books are bound in dark red cloth with gilt printing on the spine and embossed decoration on the front cover. They are all straight with tight text pages. All were published in 1907 and all have the tissue pages at title page intact. They all have some wear to the edges and rubbing; spines are a little faded. Gallegher has 238 pages; illustrations are by Charles Dana Gibson. There is writing by the previous owner on the rear endpage and the illustration page 96 is missing. Captain Macklin contains 328 pages, illustrations are by Walter Appleton Clark; previous owner's gift inscription is written on the front endpage and the illustration page 40 is missing; there is a paper slit only in the front gutter. The Lion and The Unicorn has 295 pages; illustrations are by Howard Chandler Christy. It has a paper slit at front & back gutters and the illustration page 192 is missing. The lower front corner on this volume is bumped and worn; previous owner's writing is on the endpages also, along with a circular pencil mark. The King's Jackal has 218 pages, illustration s are by Charles Dana Gibson. Illustration page 52 is missing and there is previous owner's inscription on endpapers. All volumes have some foxing of the pages and all have some bumps and bruises, but are still very nice copies of these classics. ; Vol. 4; B&W Illustrations; 7 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches.

Includes the stories: 'The King's Jackal' and 'The Reporter Who Made Himself King.' A better than very good copy. Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) was a famous American author and journalist. In 1890 he became managing editor of Harper's Weekly and began making trips in its behalf to various parts of theworld. As a foreign correspondent he covered all the wars of his day and published several books recording his experiences. His war dispatches were colorful and dramatic. His other writings include some of the best tales to come out of the Edwardian era. The illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), is especially famous as a delineator of aristocratic social ideals; most notably that of the ideal woman who came to be known as the Gibson Girl. His incisive drawings of fashionable life often convey both humor and understanding. He illustrated numerous books, including several for Richard Harding Davis. W53 Hardcover
