This sensitive biography of Lewis Carroll explores the background and events of Charles Dodgson's life to discover the surprising sources of much Alice imagery- the White Rabbit's gloves, the Gryphon who said 'Hjckrrh!', the mirror-writing of Looking-glass. Er ist der Autor der berühmten Kinderbücher Alice im Wunderland, Alice hinter den Spiegeln (oder Alice im Spiegelland) und The Hunting of the Snark. Mit seiner Befähigung für Wortspiel, Logik und Fantasie schaffte er es, weite Leserkreise zu fesseln. Seine Werke, als sogenannte Nonsenseliteratur bezeichnet, sind bis heute populär geblieben und haben nicht nur die Kinderliteratur, sondern ebenso Schriftsteller wie James Joyce, die Surrealisten wie Andre Breton oder den Kognitionswissenschaftler Douglas R. Hofstadter beeinflusst. Bekannt wurde Carroll auch als Fotograf: Wie Julia Margaret Cameron und Oscar Gustave Rejlander betrieb er bereits ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts Fotografie als Kunst. Dodgson alias Carroll stammte aus einer nordenglischen Familie mit irischen Verbindungen - konservativ, anglikanisch, obere Mittelklasse -, deren Mitglieder die für ihre Klasse typischen Berufe in Armee und Kirche wählten. Sein Urgroßvater, der wie sein Großvater und sein Vater ebenfalls Charles hieß, war in der anglikanischen Gemeinschaft bis zum Bischof aufgestiegen; sein Großvater starb im Dezember 1803 als Hauptmann der britischen Armee (4. Dragoon Guards) im Einsatz, als seine beiden Söhne noch Kleinkinder waren. Er war in Irland stationiert und wurde aus dem Hinterhalt erschossen, als er sich nachts mit einem irischen Rebellen treffen wollte, der behauptet hatte, sich ergeben zu wollen. Der ältere seiner beiden Söhne, der 1800 geborene Charles Dodgson, der Vater von Lewis Carroll, wandte sich der anderen Familientradition zu und schlug die geistliche Laufbahn ein. This copy lacks the facsimile of the 1865 first edition of author Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" otherwise a copy of a wonderful production of this Lewis Carroll classic read and sung by Cyril Ritchard with and original musical score by composer Alec Wilder and played by The New York Woowind Quintet.
