NEWTON, John.
New edition of a collection of autobiographical letters by John Newton (1725-1807), English divine and friend of the poet Cowper. John Newton had led a rather eventful life at sea, among others sailing on a slaver and working for a slave-trader on one of the Plantane islands. But on one of his home voyages during a terrible storm in 1748, Newton experienced a deep religious feeling and to the end of his days he kept the "anniversary of his conversion". When he stopped with his life at sea, in 1754, because of ill-health, he became surveyor of the tides at Liverpool. But he had already taught himself the books of Euclid and learned to read Virgile, Terence, Livy and Erasmus in Latin, and could quote Horace by heart. He met with Whitefield, and started to learn Greek and a little Syriac to study the bible, wanting to become a clergyman, but the archbishop of York turned him down. Then in 1863 he is introduced by Dr. Haweis, rector of Aldwinkle, to the Evangelical Lord Dartmouth and is ordained a priest. His first charge was the curacy of Olney and in 1764 he also published the first of his many books, "The Authentic Narrative" of his life at sea. It made him very popular at his church and with the reading public. In 1781 he published his most famous work, a collection of spiritual letters under the title "Cardiphonia", which was also translated into Dutch. The present letters to Haweis telling about his life and adventures was first published in Dutch in 1767, then they were forgotten, but after "Cardiphonia" was published the letters to Haweis became in popular demand again, and were published anew with a Dutch introduction in 1784. Completely sold out, the present third edition was published unchanged, because the author's history of the church in the first centuries of christianity was in the process of being published as well.
Good copy.
