Bronte, Charlotte: JANE EYRE. Aus dem Engl.u.Nachw.v.Berhard Schindler. Leipzig, G.Kiepenheuer 1989.

(BRONTE, Charlotte). Jane Eyre. An Autobiography. Edited by Currer Bell. London. Smith, Elder & Co. 1847.
First edition of Charlotte Bronte's pseudonymously published first novel and the first published work of any of the Bronte sisters.Charlotte Bronte (1816 - 1855), the eldest of the three Bronte sisters published Jane Eyre in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell and was thought by many contemporary reviewers to be a man. Charlotte and her sisters Anne and Emily had previously published (in May 1846) a collection of poetry - also pseudonymously - under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, deliberately using androgynous names on the grounds that 'authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice'. Although the collection met with little success (reports suggest that only two copies were actually sold), the sisters persisted with their literary endeavours and in 1847 published three of the most important English novels of the Victorian, or indeed any, period: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights (Emily) and Agnes Grey (Anne), although it is clear that the publication of the two latter novels depended very much on the success of the first. Jane Eyre, with its Gothic overtones, Byronic hero, proto-feminist heroine and vampiric mad woman in the attic appealed enormously to its Victorian audience and was an enormous success; published initially in an edition of five hundred copies, a second edition was published a mere three months later.'It is sure to be in demand.' (Prescient contemporary reviewer writing shortly after publication in The Critic, October 1847).'This [Jane Eyre], indeed, is a book after our own heart; and, if its merits have not forced it into notice by the time this paper comes before our readers, let us, in all earnestness, bid them lose not a day in sending for it ... no such book has gladdened our eyes for a long while ... The story is not only of singular interest, naturally evolved, unflagging to the last, but it fastens itself upon your attention, and will not leave you. The book closed, the enchantment continues.' (Contemporary reviewer writing in Fraser's Magazine, December 1847).
