Liechtenstein, Princess Marie: HOLLAND HOUSE (2 Vols. -- Bound in Attractive Tree Calf by Cecil and Larkins) London London: Macmillan And Co. 1874 1874
Very Good Many Illustrations Including Ground Plans and Fold-out Facsimile Letters

A still very handsome, exquisitely bound set although volume one was exposed to damping at one time and so condition of that volume is not as nice as the very good (and even better perhaps) volume 2. No musty smell and no foxing as a result of the damping in volume one, which left a tide line in the blank margins of the pages, most noticeable at the beginning and end of the volume. Leather of volume one affected somewhat by the damping which caused a darkening to the edges of the otherwise honey-hued covers. The leather of lower spine compartments of volume one are likewise affected by a darkening, but the two volumes still match quite well on the shelf because the bright red and green spine compartments of morocco for the titles and volume numbers (in bright gilt over the morocco colors) are not much affected by the darkening. The spines with five raised bands and lavishly gilt embellished. The covers with a lovely tree calf pattern and with gilt chain design borders. Fold-overs with an elaborate floral gilt embellished design. Edges of text block marbled with predominant color of blue to match the marbled endpapers. Bindings identified as by Cecil and Larkins on upper inside edges of the front free marbled endpapers. Contents of both volumes are still very white and bright (aside from the tide lines noted for volume one). Each volume with wear at outer joints and top front edge of volume two joint starting to crack. But inner hinges unbroken and bindings are solid. Volume one frontispiece of Lord Holland and title page engraved with portrait of Lady Holland. Volume two with enchanting frontispiece of little girl standing next to her dog, which is almost as big as she is. Engraving on this title page of Elizabeth Lady Holland holding puppy in her lap. Each volume beautifully illustrated with in-text woodcut engravings (none of which in volume one are affected by the tide lines). Volume one with fold-out facsimile of an invoice by Hogarth (affected by damp stain at edge) and volume two with five facsimile fold-out letters and two other facsimiles. First Edition Full Leather Octavo, 289, 255pp

MacPherson, Jeanie and MacMahon, Henry: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, New York New York: Grosset and Dunlap (1924) 1924
Good Illustrated with Scenes from the Movie Produced By Cecil B. DeMille

In an unusually well preserved dust jacket. Jacket is bright and colorful, with just a little chipping at the edges. No price on the jacket, but this is a circa 1924 -25 copy of the book. There is a gift inscription on the half title page with date 12/25/25. Book and jacket with a bit of exposure to moisture at one time as there is an old water stain tide line at upper blank margin of the first part of the book. Otherwise the pages are clean. Tight and square binding, and the dust jacket is still wonderfully bright and basically intact. Jacket also shows some evidence of the water staining but it blends in for the most part. The illustrations and colorized photos on the jacket not affected. Jacket with ads for other Grosset and Dunlap books on the back side. This scarce survivor of a jacket is now preserved in a mylar clear protector of course. Endpaper photos of the scenes from the C. B. DeMille movie. Good+ Hardcover Octavo, 236pp + Ads

Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket Edition: 1st Edition; 1st Printing Cover Art; The spine ends and corners of the book cover have extremely light bumping and rubbing. There is a slight slant to the spine of the book. Sturdy reinforced brown cloth library binding (but not ex library copy) has gilt lettering to the spine of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. Endpapers are a solid white color of slightly heavier paper. All three edges of the text block have some yellowing / toning with the heaviest toning on the top edge of the text block. The spine ends and corners of the dust jacket have a bit of very light bumping and rubbing. Dust jacket is approximately one quarter inch smaller than the book itself (apparently this was a fault that occurred with most, if not all of the dust jackets produced for this book). Both the front and rear endpapers were taped with clear tape - most of the tape has been expertly removed, however there is a slight shadow to the front pastedown page due to the tape, three light tape shadows and some beginning fuzziness to the rear pastedown where paper was lifted, and both dust jacket flaps still have some light tape or tape shadows. The front dust jacket tape has an associated one inch tear. The rear dust jacket cover and dust jacket spine has tide marking (foxing in the shape of a travelling stain -- but NOT a water stain or water marking). The tidemarking is noticeable, but somewhat subtle. Overall, a nice bright copy. "I stood on a fancifully carved balcony of opalescent stone looking down upon a fantastic city not yet awakened from the hours of sleep. In the rosy sky, strange seeming to my half-earthly eyes and yet familiar, were the first golden strands of dawn. Yu-lac, the Mighty, lay below me and I was Lord Garan, Marshal of the Emperor's Air Fleet, peer of the Empire - but I was also Garin of Tav, earthly reincarnation of that other Garan."

Very Good Plus

VG+/VG+. A very rare title, "Re-Forging America: The Story of Our Nationhood", author of "The Rising Tide of Color". "This book essays the story of American nationhood. It tells how, on the deep foundations of the long colonial past, there arose a splendid young nation. It goes on to tell how the bright promise of our early days was darkened by the disaster of the Civil War and by the blight of alien factors." So states the front cover of the jacket, which goes on to talk about the problem of the 'negro' and 'alien' factors. The dj is intact with a little wear, one 1/2" closed tear plus a little light chipping to the top of the jacket. Spine is discolored and sunned, while just a little of the original blue of the jacket remains on the covers, with the flaps still being bright. The book is tight and clean, with a pos written in pen on the ffep, and less than 10 pages showing light markings highlighting text, although the markings are usually minimal where they exist. An extremely rare example of extremism in American thought during the 1920s. First Edition Very Good Plus Cloth 8vo - 7¾" - 9¾"; First Edition
