He was only 32 when 'Bomber' Harris made him an Air Vice-Marshal and put him in charge of the Pathfinder Force which undoubtedly turned the hit-or-miss performance of Bomber Command into one of the mo st decisive factors in the defeat of the mighty and highly professional German war machine..."
