MESENS, E[douard]. L[eon]. T[heodore]. Poemes. 1923 - 1958. Dix dessins de Rene Magritte. Paris. Le Terrain Vague. 1959.
PRESENTATION COPY FROM MESENS TO SURREALIST AND JAZZMAN GEORGE MELLY WITH ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS BY MESENS.From the edition limited to 1,050 copies, with this one of 1,000 on 'offset neige du Marais' with a presentation on the half-title to George Melly and his then wife, Vicky: 'Celebration des / fetes victoriennes. / A Vicky [in orange marker pen, underlined in red, later crossed out in biro and marked with an asterisk; the preceding page has the accompanying asterisk with the text: 'Succession de la Reine par DIANE [in red marker pen] CHASSERESSE [in biro and yellow crayon]] et / l'ami George Melly [in red and blue marker pen] / ces [printed text: Poemes / 1923 - 1958], temoignages / de 35 [in blue and red marker pen] ans de laborieux / services dans le monde des / arts et de l'imposture / trafiquante et RIDICULE [in blue marker pen]. / La vie, la poesie ... / E. L. T. Mesens [in red marker pen].' The page is additionally decorated with flourishes in red marker and two fish-like eyes. The facing page has been embellished by Mesens with a drawing in red, blue and orange marker pen of an esoteric trio of an eye (in red and orange marker), a vortex (in red marker) and a five-pointed star (in blue marker), the whole crossed through in red marker. Mesens has decorated the first blank leaf with the same design - the colours of the marker pens showing through the paper - although he has heightened them with blue biro, drawn a smaller red star in the centre of the blue one, highlighted the vortex in green divided the page into 'Homme' and 'Maman' and initialled the whole in blue biro highlighted with green marker. An additional colour design of lines adorns the top right hand corner of the page in different colour marker pens. Mesens has also inscribed the title-page with the word 'Maman' and drawn at the head of the page a fish-like eye with a double tail. Mesens final contribution to his own work is a cryptic instruction adjacent to Eluard's description of Mesens' 'sourd aveugle' alphabet: 'I beg your pardon, but / please read in the numbered order' with the numbers '5 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 1 / 6 / 7 / 8'. It is unclear to what the numbers refer. Melly's contributions are limited to occasional manuscript corrections to typographical errors in the text, although also included is a newspaper cutting - used presumably as a book mark - of a critique of Magritte in which the phrase 'The airless, obsessional qualities of Magritte's paintings may not place him alongside Picasso, Ernst, Miro, and Tanguy as a great surrealist' has been outlined by Melly in biro and next to it written the word 'cunt!'.George Melly (1926 - 2007), anarchist, Surrealist, addict of loud suits and fedoras and described by a friend as 'the Oscar Wilde of English jazz', was introduced to Surrealism by Mesens after a period of service in the Navy. Melly worked for Mesens at the London Gallery as well as indulging in a troilist relationship with Mesens and his wife Sybil. The 'Vicky' of Mesens' presentation was Melly's first wife Victoria Vaughan (the marriage was short-lived) while her replacement in the presentation 'Diana Chasseresse' was his second wife Diana Moynihan. As a lifelong admirer of Surrealism (about which he wrote a book and lectured) and in particular Magritte, whose painting Le Viol had provoked Melly's admiration while he was still at Stowe, Melly necessarily took offence at the critical newspaper cutting used as a book mark here.E. L. T. Mesens (1913 - 1971), the influential Belgian Surrealist who started his career as an Erik Satie-influenced musician and dadaist poet, was, with Roland Penrose a director of the London Gallery and co-producer of the London Gallery Bulletin, as well as a noted poet and artist. He collaborated on several works with his compatriot and lifetime friend Rene Magritte.
8vo. pp. 186, (1 blank leaf), (leaf with acheve d'imprimer), (1 blank leaf). Original publisher's printed wrappers, title altered by Mesens in ink and yellow crayon to read 'Poemes / de Chasse' and with an additional drawing by Mesens of a hunting horn in ink and yellow crayon. Illustrated with ten monochrome Surrealist designs by Rene Magritte.
