An outstanding and very interesting set of Franklin's works. Stated Second Edition, 1818-1819 (the first of this edition being in 1817-1818), EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with hand-colored frontispieces. This is the first appearance in any language of Parts I, II and III together, taken directly from the holograph by Franklin's grandson and heir with some editorial revisions. It is also the First Edition of Franklin's correspondence, so stated. Beautifully bound in full calf, with handmade marble endpapers in shades of brown, titles in gilt. Six compartments, raised ridges, heavily decorated spine in gilt. All edges trimmed, all edges gilt, including decorative edges of boards in gilt. This set consists of four volumes: Volume I and II containing the Life. Volume III and IV, Private Correspondence. Volumes 5 and 6, the Select Works. Volume I consists of an engraved, hand-colored frontispiece of Franklin (dated 1817). Examples of the extra-illustrations include plates of the Steam Boat Wharf, Battery Place, New York; Sir Isacc Newton along with second extra detail page about him; Saltero's Coffee House, Chelsea; William Penn; Peter Collinson; The Honorable Arthur Onslow.
