Morris, William , ed. Commonweal Magazine- First 103 Issues, Volume 1, Number 1 Through Volume 3, Number 103: Feburary 1885- December 1887: Bound Together,
Commonweal Magazine; ed. William Morris. Walter Crane designed masthead. First 103 issues; v.1, #1 through v.3, #103 (February 1885 - December 1887) in a bound, repaired volume. The first two pages are loose and chipped. Although there are a few chips and tears throughout, the interior pages are clean and bright. The first 15 issues (February, 1885 - April, 1886) were monthly, with May 1, 1886 being the first weekly issue (which schedule continued on into the next decade). Large folio size volume, bound with three-quarterleather, leather binding is repaired with binder's tape on boards at spine, and shows minor signs of wear, chipping to leather at the head at foot of spine. TEG. Bound for a a private library, wear to all extremeties. This incredibly scarce item is certainly one of the most significant artifacts extant of 19th century British Socialism. Commonweal was the official organ of the Socialist League, which had been formed a few months earlier and which had about two dozen active branches in 1885-1887. The Commonweal continued into the 1890's when it became an anarchist publication and was cut back to a monthly. In 1886 the Socialist League William Morris edited Commonweal Magazine during the publication of this item (he remained at the helm until 1890). Edward Aveling was the sub editor until shortly after it went weekly when Belfort Bax replaced him. Eleanor Marx Aveling was a regular contributor, on into the weekly period. Although Morris himself has material in almost every issue through the 1880's, Engels, George Bernard Shaw, Paul Lafargue, Bax and numerous others of importance in the socialist movement of the 1880's were contributors as well. Many items were the first appearances of these classic socialist writers.The circulation of the first issue was about 5,000. Thereafter it dropped to about 2,500 with a circulation of 2,850 at its height in Dec. of 1887The most important item in the first issue was the "Manifesto of the Socialist League. Fellow Citizens, We come before you as a body advocating the Principles of Revolutionary Socialism;..." It was signed by the 23 members of the Provisional Council of the Socialist League. Among them were such luminaries of the movement as: Edward Aveling, Eleanor Marx Aveling, E. Belfort Bax, Thomas Binning, Joseph Lane, Frederic Lessner, and William Morris."The second number, in March, must surely have been one of the most remarkable issues of any British Socialist periodical. An Editorial by Morris, articles by Bax, Stepniak, George Bernard Shaw, Paul Lafargue, Frank Kitz and Aveling were capped by three outstanding items: Eleanor Marx Aveling's "Record" included messages greeting the formation of the League from Bebel, Liebknecht, Valliant, Lafargue, Leo Frankel, Kautsky, Pierrelavroff, Stepniak and Domella Nieuwenhuis: Morris contributed his "Message of the March Wind", which was to serve as the prelude to The Pilgrims of Hope: and Engels contributed his remarkable article, "England in 1845 and in 1885", which was later included in his preface to the English edition of The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844." (E. P. Thompson, William Morris, New York, 1977, pg. 383)."Almost every issue included at least one major contribution from Morris. During 1885 The Pilgrims of Hope appeared in monthly installments: during 1886 and 1887 his series of articles with Bax, "Socialism from the Root Up", appeared side by side with A Dream of John Ball. From Morris's pen also came articles on art, labour, and occasional analyses of the political situation and the aims of the Socialists: while in the greater number of issues he contributed the "Signs of the Times", "Notes", or Editorial, which commented in detail upon the political and social scene. Even without Morris's contributions, the paper would rank among the best of Socialist journals at least until 1888 or 1889. Articles by Bax, the Avelings, Scheu, Sketchley, and a score of others were of a high quality." (Thompson, op. cit. pgs. 391-392).The primary source we used for this research was the 1977 biography of Morris by Thompson cited above. It is the bio we found that gave us real insight and information on the socialist phase and facet of this 19th century Renaissance man.Commonweal Magazine; ed. William Morris. Bax Roger: Disposing of Henry, US Harper & Brothers 1947
Near Fine /Very Good ++
243 page novel in blue boards with red lettering & white decoration. Once she'd been Daisy Waters of the London slums, but she changed her name to Denise, used what she had to offer, and moved ahead in the world. There were, as might have been expected, a number of men in her life. Each of them had his own opinion of her. William. Pargeter called her, "a filthy little gold-digger" and several other things. Henry Wycherley said, "I think you're very, very sweet, my dear." Squadron-Leader Charles Trant, D.F.C., who was more masculine and formidable than any man she could remember, said at their first meeting, "You're the loveliest creature I've seen in years." A little later he said, "We seem to suit each other." And finally he said, "I know I'm callous, but you're worse, you're a coward. You'll suffer more in the end-far more. Don't you see I'm trying to help you. You're so weak-I'm trying to give you a little strength. We botched our plans and that was mainly my fault-now I'm trying to play fair and make up for it in the only way I can." Denise answered him by saying, "If you'd ever loved me you'd never talk like this." And he replied, "If I'd ever loved you I would kill you myself. I ought to, I will if you like." Roger Bax has written a superb story of passion, violence and death, of a woman who knew what she wanted, set out to get it, found a man as ruthless as herself and with him started a fire which in the end consumed both of them. Roger Bax is an exciting new English author, who should gain for himself by Disposing of Henry a large and eager American audience.
