With a Preface by Edward Clarke. London: Stevens and Haynes, 1886. x, 313 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Original cloth, some shelfwear and dampstaining, binding somewhat cocked, crack near center of text block. Early owner signature to front free endpaper, interior otherwise clean. * One of the more unusual and baffling English murder cases, it involved liquid chloroform and an incestuous family. Mrs. Bartlett was accused of poisoning her husband in order to inherit his estate. How she murdered him remains a mystery, however. Although chloroform was found in his stomach, no traces were found in his mouth or throat. Unable to determine how she could have killed her husband, the jury did not convict Mrs. Bartlett.
