Barth, H. Travels and discoveries in North and Central Africa, being a journal of an expedition undertaken under the auspices of H.R.M.'s Government in the years 1849-1855.
London, Longman, Brown, Green, 1857-1858. In five volumes. 8vo.1/2 ed. With five chromolithographed frontispiece, 55 chromolithographed plates, 15 folded maps. Recent half calf in old style with raised bands.* A good copy of one of the great classics on African Exploration. In 1850 Barth joined Overweg and Richardson on an expedition, sponsered by the British Government to establish commercial relations with all states central and western of Sudan. Following the death of his companions, Barth was left to carry out the project alone. He made detailed maps and observations, many times for the first time. Some maps repaired on folds. The binding is very nicely done.
