This unique publication provides an overview of Islamic history from its inception up to the beginning of the twentieth century. An Historical Atlas of Islam/Atlas Historique de l'Islam is divided into ten sections: - The Early Muslim Earth and Sky - The Extension of the Muslim World - The Arabian Peninsula - Egypt and the Fertile Crescent - Iran and Transoxania - The Caucasus - Anatolia and the Balkans - Al-Andalus (Spain and Portugal) and al-Maghrib - India and the Indian Ocean - The Far East Throughout these sections a broad variety of topics is being covered. From The Arabian Peninsula in the time of the Hijra to al-Andalus and al-Maghrib: The Muslim Conquest, and from Medieval Islamic Egypt to Islam in China. About one third of the maps in this second edition are new and include - Environments and Mineral Resources of the Islamic World - Yemen and the Hadramaut - The Arabian Peninsula in Islamic Times - Iran under the Mongols; and under the Savafid and Qajar Dynasties - The Fertile Crescent - Caucasus in the Early Middle Ages - The Maghrib in the Age of Almoravids & Almohads - and many other regional maps. Other maps in this edition, already available in the first edition, have been edited to make them even more consistent and accurate, e.g. - The Muslim World - Arabia - Byzantine Anatolia - Saljuq Anatolia - Spain and the Mahgrib A substantial number of new city maps has also been added to the second edition of An Historical Atlas of Islam/Atlas Historique de l'Islam, including - Sanaa - Damascus - Aleppo - Mosul - Baghdad - Cairo - Isfahan - Samarkand - Cordoba - Granada - Delhi - and many others. The maps are intended to give historians of urban development an idea of the shape and structure of the cities and to assist them in locating city gates, walls and major monuments as they are referred to in historical texts. To achieve this, the maps reflect the situation before the changes of the twentieth century. An Historical Atlas of Islam/Atlas Historique de l'Islam also includes a CD-ROM with all maps from the printed version. A user friendly navigation function, using an alphabetical index of places and regions guarantees quick and efficient access to the maps. GERLAND, GEORG. Atlas der Völkerkunde (Berghaus' Physikalischer Atlas, Abteilung VII).

Amerikanische Urbevölkerung (2 Karten); XIII. Amerika 1880 (2 Karten); XIV. Die Sprachen der erde bis um 1890 (9 Karten); XV. Europa um 100 - 150 nach Christi Geburt (5 Karten). ANTHROPOLOGY owes much to Prof. Gerland. His new Atlas of Ethnology, while forming part of the great Physical Atlas of Berghaus, may be obtained and used as a separate work by anthropologists, to whom it will be of great service in methodizing the vast and growing information with which they have to deal. This application of graphical method, it is true, has difficulties which even the greatest skill cannot altogether overcome, but Prof. Gerland may well be content with his success in making evident at a glance the characteristics of mankind, seen from many points of view. Their distribution over the earth, as thus made evident, may often lead straight on into theories of origin. The fifteen plates contain nearly fifty maps, each suggesting a principle, or showing where there is room for one (Nature, 47). THE AMERICAN ANTROPOLOGIST. [Vol. VI) on Die Atlas der Völkerkunde: This meritorious work, with its vast assemblage of details, may be called unique in its execution, though not in conception. It is an enlargement of the ethnological or seventh part of Heinrich Berghaus' (' Physikalischem Atlas), and Berghaus' maps are here so thoroughly recast that even their outlines are scarcely recognizable, for modern research has made too many additions necessary. Preliminary remarks are added in form of a preface, and their perusal is absolutely necessary for the comprehension of the maps. These are subdivided into little squares by lines drawn from east to west and by other lines intersecting them vertically, so that any name mentioned in the index can be found by consulti'ng the squares. One planiglobe serves to represent the color of the skin in the different races, another that of the hair, of which there are two great subdivisions, straight and curly. The density of the population is very graphically represented by the increasing density of the shades. Religion, religious conceptions, endemic distempers, epidemics of the nineteenth century, dress, foods, human occupations and dwellings fill each one planiglobe. Then come the races, nations, and tribes of the five parts of the world, represented on seven full-si (booknr: 38588)

(Herausg.): Atlas of European Trichoptera / Atlas der Europäischen Köcherfliegen / Atlas des Trichopteres d' Europe, Springer Netherlands, ISBN: 1402029535
Leichte Lagerspuren Pressestimmen\nFrom the reviews of the second edition: The first edition of this atlas was published in 1983. It has been the standard reference to determine adult caddisflies of Europe including the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The large sized book is well produced . An excellent service for those who want to know more is the inclusion of references . This second edition updates the unrivalled standard work for determination and faunistics of European caddis, and it is simply essential for everyone dealing with Trichoptera. (Arnold H. Staniczek, Aquatic Insects, Vol. 28 (2), June, 2006) The first edition of this atlas appeared in 1983. ... The second edition of the Atlas is an updated, complete version at the species level and will certainly follow its predecessor as the standard identification book for adult Trichoptera in Europe for the next decades to come. It is indispensable for all Trichoptera workers and aquatic entomologists in Europe and beyond. The perseverance and tremendous effort H. Malicky has spent on producing this volume deserves our full acknowledgement and respect. (Wolfram Mey, Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift, Vol. 53 (2), 2006) \n\nKurzbeschreibung\nCaddis flies are important indicators of environmental quality in aquatic biotopes. This Atlas is the first book which enables the identification of the entire European caddis fly fauna since McLachlan’s Revision and Synopsis of 1874-1880. Identification of European caddis flies has proved difficult as a result of the widely scattered literature, and has therefore been a matter for specialists for more than hundred years. This Second Edition of The Atlas of European Trichoptera contains over 1400 species which means an increase of 25% since the first edition of 1983. Identification of specimens is one of the most difficult tasks in Zoology. This volume presents information which will enable the reader to develop his own opinions and will also help him reach decisions concerning the accuracy of his own results. The identification of specimens is undertaken by comparing the detailed drawings of the most important characteristics of all species known in Europe, the Mediterranean countries north of the Sahara, the Canary islands, Madeira, the Azores islands and the adjacent eastern regions including the Arab Peninsula and Iran. The fauna of Turkistan and Siberia is partially included. Explanations of the drawings are provided mainly by symbols which enable the use of this book independent of language. This concept has been proved successful in University courses. The introductory chapters are in English, German and French. Should a reader not understand any of these languages, the translation of these few pages, including the pages of explanations, will provide sufficient understanding for the entire book. , ISBN-13: 9781402029530
