From the blurb: - "The author has written an imaginative reconstruction of the life of Anna Sewell (1820-78), author of that most famous of all animal stories, Black Beauty, making skilful use of the known facts about Anna and her family. Brought up in a poor Quaker home, Anna and her brother were happy, natural children, and Anna showed her love of horses, birds, and flowers at a very early age. Lamed as a result of an accident when a child, she used ponies and horses for getting about. Always she was concerned for their comfort and happiness. Nothing upset her more than cruelty in any form. It was toward the end of her comparatively short life that she decided to write a book that would repay the debt she owed to horses, and would be also a plea for kindness to animals. Black Beauty took several years to complete, and was eventually sold to a publisher for 20 outright. When Anna Sewell died, 91,000 copies of the book had been sold. Since then it has been translated into most European languages and some in the Middle and Far East. It is estimated that sales have reached several million copies."

Anna Sewell (* 30. März 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England; 25. April 1878) war eine britische Schriftstellerin und verfasste das Buch Black Beauty. Ihre Mutter war die derzeit unbekannte Jugendbuch-Autorin Mary Wright Sewell, der Vater war Manager einer Bank. Mit 12 Jahren stürzte sie und zog sich eine Knieverletzung zu, die nie ausheilte. Sie konnte deshalb nur noch mit Krücken gehen und fuhr häufig eine Kutsche. Dadurch bekam sie eine enge Beziehung zu Pferden, die in jener Zeit oft sehr schlecht behandelt wurden. Außerdem half sie ihrer Mutter häufig beim Korrigieren ihrer Bücher und wurde dadurch mit der Schriftstellerei bekannt. In ihrem letzten Lebensjahrzehnt war sie aufgrund ihrer Krankheit ans Haus gebunden und verfasste in dieser Zeit ihr einziges Buch: "Black Beauty" - die autobiographisch geschilderte Lebensgeschichte eines geschundenen Pferdes, die aber ein Happy End hat. Das Buch wurde ein Welterfolg und diente als Vorlage für Film- und Fernseh-Produktionen. Anna Sewell erlebte diesen Erfolg nicht mehr: Sie starb drei Monate vor Veröffentlichung ihres Werkes.
