Beautiful set in contemporary smooth light brown calf., maroon and black leather title panels with volume numbers, decorated with gilt. Volumes I, II, and IV., have some loss to title panel, only Vol. IV does it affect a letter the second P in Pope. Mild rubbing of spines and boards, four volumes have dryness at the head of spines. Light scratches to boards. Peacock marbled e.p.'s, gilt dentelle to edge of boards. Clean bright text, no inscriptions, hinges tight, solid in bindings. TEG. Very lovely set. Click for photography. Alexander Pope, London, (1688 - 1744), poet, critic, essayist. The foremost English poet of eighteenth century, whose verse was moralistic or satirical vein, a style representative the great classical poets. Pope used the popular form of "heroic couplets" with exceptional genius creating witty and satiric epic's which became the dominating form of verse in his century. He first came to literary attention with Pastorals (1709), appearing Jacob Tonson's Poetical Miscellanies, is next work Essay on Criticism (1711) modeled was after Horace's Art of Poetry, with a broad background of influences from other periods. In 1712 one of the most famous poems of Pope's Works was published "The Rape of the Lock," a satire based on a true story of two lover's whose aristocratic families are at war with each other when the suitor cuts of a lock of his lover's hair without permission. Pope's epic narrative using stories of Greek Gods comically illustrates the breach. Pope was a prolific writer who also translated Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey," along with publishing an edition of Shakespeare's plays. He was an a esteemed poet among his peers and holds an acknowledged place in the canon of English Literature. This "new" eight volume set (first published in 1824, 10 volumes): Volume I.
