Antonia Hoerschelmann; Alex Katz - Kartons & Gemälde; Wien Albertina 2004/05
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Katz (born 1927) won acclaim as the master of cool at the end of the 1980s, or at least after the 1997 exhibition in Hamburg and Zurich of contemporary American art, 'Birth of the Cool', and has become one of the most influential painters of our times. The monumental cartoons that serve as preparatory drawings for Katz?'s paintings have never before been exhibited. In each cartoon he fixes the outlines of a composition before transferring it to a same-size canvas and transforming it into the blazing colours that characterise his painting. For Katz, drawing is at the heart of his working method. Even though the cartoon is a preliminary study, part of the process of producing a painting, he sees it as a finished, self-contained document with an artistic message. The volume includes about 50 works on paper and cartoon, reproduced in large sized, high quality illustrations and some explanatory texts. Text in englischer und deutscher Sprache.

Katz, Alex und Ann Beattie: Alex Katz. New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1987. ISBN: 9780810912120
Umschlag leicht berieben und am Rücken etwas ausgeblichen, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Inhalt: List of Plates -- Editor's Note -- A Reading of Alex Katz -- Ada -- Narratives -- Inanimate Portraits -- Couples. - Klappentext: In this, her first book-length work of non-fiction, famed short story writer and novelist Ann Beattie steps out of the world of fiction and into the world of art as she examines the work of the artist Alex Katz. In an effort to bring together artists in two different mediums who share similar sensibilities and techniques, this book reveals the work of Alex Katz in a provocative and original new light. Centering her text around a personal selection of 26 paintings-many of which are from the 1980s and have never been reproduced in book form before-Beattie draws an engaging, personalized portrait of the artist and his work. Alex Katz, she writes, "is happier talking about the impetus that directs his sensibility...than he is critiquing what emotions his subjects display in the paintings. Yet," she continues, "after some examination, the real importance becomes apparent: that whether or not the painter intends a psychological dimension it is there, and that he is providing us with an opportunity to study human nature." So begins the acclaimed fiction writer's essay on the work of Katz, an essay that displays the same extraordinary powers of observation and insight that have distinguished her fiction writing since she first came to prominence in the early 1970s. For this work Beattie interviewed not only the artist but some of the subjects of his paintings: among them Jennifer Bartlett, Rackstraw Downes, John Loring, and Katz's most frequently painted subject, his wife, Ada. Each of them reveals to Beattie what it is like to pose for Katz, while Beattie goes one step further and reveals to us the sometimes startling stories they end up enacting on canvas.
