First appearance of Schweigger's important publication on ophthalmoscope: "This collection of Schweigger's lectures on the use of the ophthalmoscope is the first comprehensive work on the subject. The author is careful to provide anatomical interpretations for the ophthalmoscopic observations described. Schweigger's was the authoritative textbook until the appearance of Mauthner's Lehrbuch der Ophthalmoscopie in 1868." - Albert, et al. Karl Schweigger received the M.D. in 1852 from the University of Halle. Schweigger served as assistant to von Graefe in Berlin from 1857-1864, and was professor of ophthalmology at Göttingen from 1868-1871. Schweigger succeeded von Graefe in Berlin in 1871.
