First Heath or Bensley edition. Large quarto illustrated set of JOHNSON AND STEEVENS' PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, first published in 1773 and "considered the best edition that had appeared up to that time, and was long regarded as the standard" (Grolier Shakespeare's Plays, 19). This 1807 printing of their text is beautifully illustrated with 11 full-page plates and 11 vignettes engraved by Heath after Stothard, Fuseli and Hamilton and "holds a place among notable editions of the period because the six imperial quarto volumes were printed by Bensley in close imitation of the Boydell folios." Jaggard, 511. Lowndes, 2264. James Heath (1757?-1834) was the London-born son of a bookbinder. The family originated in Nottingham where James Heath's grandfather Joseph Heath was a bookseller and writing-master. James was apprenticed to the engraved Joseph Collyer the younger in 1771 and became established as one of the leading line engravers of his time. His first major success was in engraving plates for Bell's edition of The Poets of Great Britain. He was employed by the Robinson family of booksellers from 1779 to 1804. He became one of the most widely-employed engravers of the age, producing illustrations for many celebrated works including Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy; Vancouver's A voyage of discovery to the north Pacific Ocean, and round the world; Bruce's Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile; and the frontispiece portrait to Boswell's Life of Johnson. He engraved some plates for Boydell's Shakspeare Gallery, and in 1807 published this six-volume set of Shakespeare illustrated with engravings after works by Stothard and Henry Fuseli on his own account, a substantial demonstration of his huge popularity (Jaggard, p. 509, cit. Peter Harrington Antiquarian Bookseller, London). Original, contemporary binding over five raised bands. Burgundy cloth covers with leather spines and edges. Spines are lettered, numbered, placed and dated in gilt, with gilt rules and ornaments. Full gilt edging. Marbled endpapers and a wide margined text. Outer hinges partly and superficially cracked, but firm; corners partly bumped or slightly worn. Brown shadowing on pages facing the plates; else text and plates clean and bright.
