BLAKE, William (illustrator). Invented & engraved by William Blake, 1825. [London: Published by the Author, and Mr. J. Linnell, 1874]. One of 100 sets printed on india paper. Folio (sheets: 20 x 14 inches; 510 x 350 mm. engravings 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches; 209 x 158 mm). Line-engraved title and twenty-one line- and stipple-engraved plates by and after Blake. Also with an additional letterpress title-page, not issued with the book. Printed from the original plates. Evidence of the word proof on the lower edge of engravings number 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18 and 20. Bound in quarter reverse calf over black cloth. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. With black and red morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Corners a bit bumped, and cloth lightly scuffed. Sheets mounted on stubs. A bit of very light foxing to some of the sheets, generally not affecting engravings, mainly title-page sheet and sheet of plate 20. Plate 14 with the mounting sheet trimmed at top margin about 1.5 inches, not affecting plate. A fine, strikingly clean copy of "Blake's most widely known achievement" (Keynes). The engravings were commissioned by John Linnell on March 25, 1823. Despite the date 1825 on the engravings, the plates were not actually issued until March 1826. The entire edition consisted of 315 sets: 150 "Proof" sets on India paper and sixty-five on French paper were printed in March 1826, at which time the word "Proof" was removed from the plates and 100 sets were printed on drawing paper (see Bentley). Blake's original copperplates remained in the possession of the Linnell family, and as late as 1863, Linnell was offering for sale sets of the India-paper and French-paper issues. By 1874 these must have been sold, as a further 100 sets of the engravings were printed at that time (the present copy is from this set). No more pulls were taken between 1874 and 1919, when the copperplates were given by Herbert Linnell to the British Museum. Linnell's son wrote "My father considered the plates at the last [1874] were as good as they ever were, for the work being cut by a graver, and not etched, it is durable- and is not worn by the printing as is the case with an etching." (Bentley Books, p. 523). Bentley 421A. Binyon 105-126. Russell 33. HBS 65634. $32,500.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. London, The Nonesuch Press, 1937 (first thus). Octavo, 52 pages with numerous illustrations, plus a folder containing an additional suite of 17 loose plates in an endpocket. Original patterned cloth lettered in brown on the spine; all edges uncut; top edge lightly foxed; an excellent copy with the plain glassine dustwrapper chipped and torn with minor loss. Number 552 of 1000 copies printed at the Curwen Press. '[Robert] Thornton had published his school edition of Virgil in 1812, with a second edition printed in 1819. This included not only Virgil's Latin verses but also "imitations" of Virgilian poetry by other authors. One of these was Ambrose Phillips, who had written an imitation of Virgil's first Eclogue (or pastoral poem composed in the form of a dialogue). Blake was commissioned to illustrate Phillips's verses for the expanded third edition of Thornton's Virgil for which he provided seventeen wood-engraved designs' (National Gallery of Victoria website). This curious publication charts the history of these illustrations. It reproduces the suite of 17 wood engravings as they appeared in the published work, three wood engravings after Blake's designs cut by a journeyman engraver, eight proofs printed before the blocks were cut down by the publisher, and 16 preliminary drawings; the additional suite of loose plates is printed from electrotypes taken directly Blake's original blocks. The informative introduction is by Geoffrey Keynes.

Illustrations of the Book of Job with essays and commentary from several notable Blake scholars including Charles Ryskamp, David Bindman, John Commander, Geoffrey Keynes, Robert Essick, Bo Lindberg, and Barbara Bryant. The plates are comprised of 22 fascicules including the title-page and 21 plates of Blake's engraved Illustrations of the Book of Job in facsimile of the proof copy lately in the collection of Sir Geoffrey Keynes. Each fascicule also contains reproductions of related material together with a plate-by-plate commentary by Bo Lindberg. Colour versions of WIlliam Blake's Book of Job designs. with three portfolios containing "The New Zealand Set" of 21 plates and a title-page, "The Collins Set of Coloured Engravings" of 21 plates and a title-page, and "Four Coloured Engravings" of plates 11, 15, 18 and 20 from The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Plates printed by pochoir method at the Trianon Press, Paris, under the supervision of the late Arnold Fawcus.A surprisingly hard title to find from the Blake Trust, being their last publication until the 2009 issue of "The Grave" watercolors. The edition included a less expensive version of this issue, as well as two more elaborate issues. The analysis of the various states of the Job plates, and of the coloring of the three colored copies known, is not printed anywhere else and thus this set is essential for anyone studying this book, surely Blake's masterpiece of engraving.
[N. P.]: The William Blake Trust, 2009. Folio, 95pp. Original quarter-maroon calf with black moiré silk-covered boards, with gilt lettered maroon-morocco label to top board, backstrip likewise stamped in gilt; portfolio in full maroon calf containing 17 of 19 watercolors (and one duplicate) reproduced in facsimile, mounted within framing lines on heavy beige paper, black moiré silk-covered double slipcase; illustrated throughout with color reproductions of watercolor drawings, as well as engravings. § Out of series trial copy of the de luxe edition, limited to 36 copies. The entire edition is out of print. From the announcement: "These watercolor designs, which disappeared from the public eye from 1836-2001, came to light in a Glasgow bookshop, and were [later] offered as an entity to institutions and collectors at a price which, as it turned out, none could afford, or at least, was prepared to pay. Eventually, in the face of much protest, the portfolio and the 19 designs were offered for sale in 20 separate lots at Sotheby's, New York, in 2006. The drawings are now widely dispersed and it is most unlikely that they will ever again be seen together." The sale was roundly condemned at the time as an act of cultural crime. This book and the facsimile portfolio are now the only record we will ever have of the original series. Happily, the Blake Trust created a superb book, which is and will surely remain the single most valuable reference work on these remarkable Blake drawings.

Limited edition, one of 36 special copies from a total edition of 150 copies. Folio. 95, (1) pp. Publisher's wine red half calf over black moiré silk, gilt lettered to the spine with a matching gilt lettered label to the upper board, slipcase in matching moiré silk. Illustrated in colour and black and white; slipcase also housing a matching red full calf portfolio enclosing a card wallet holding fine reproductions of Blake's original watercolours mounted on card, as per the originals. Just some slight dustiness to the slipcase, a sumptuous production. An out-of-series set, marked as such on the watercolours wallet, being John Commander's own copy. Although not inscribed by him directly, the set was acquired from Commander's estate. Loosely inserted is a 12 page typescript of a review of the work by his fellow Blake scholar Robert N. Essick with Commander's pencilled annotations at intervals concerning some of Essick's observations. Also enclosed is an original 6" x 4" colour photograph captioned in pencil on the rear "John [Commander], Bob [Essick], Detto [unknown]" dated "October 21, 1991". Commander spent his life in publishing and for many years headed the Scolar Press. An expert on Blake, he was heavily involved in the refounding of the William Blake Trust and was appointed as secretary and executive director of the organisation. He also wrote about Blake and is credited with the design and production of this work on the verso of the title page. The story of the origins and subsequent disappearance of William Blake's designs for "The Grave" are long and complicated. Blake had been commissioned by Robert Hartley Cromek to produce illustrations for Blair's poem in late 1805 intending for a published edition. Blake assumed he would also be employed to engrave the images and be paid accordingly. However, Cromek had other ideas and gave the work to the Italian engraver Luigi (or Louis) Schiavonetti. Various miscommunications and provocations ensued causing Blake and Cromek to fall out. The published work eventually appeared in 1808 and Cromek passed away four years later at the age of 42. The whereabouts of Blake's designs for the next two decades are broadly known but after their sale in 1836 they completely disappeared. Nineteen of the watercolours in their original red portfolio (reproduced faithfully here) eventually turned up in Glasgow in 2001. Originally offered for sale together as a collection, the ownership passed to a London art dealer who failed to find a buyer. They were subsequently individually lotted up, including the case, and sold at Sotheby's New York in 2006. Now split between "four different countries and two continents", the auction was the last time the collection was held in one place.
