Premier tirage de ce superbe album dédié à la reine Charlotte et comprenant une carte générale en frontispice et 72 planches gravées des plus beaux sites d'Italie. Chef-d'oeuvre du peintre aquarelliste anglais John "Warwick" Smith (1749-1831), ces compositions pré-romantiques sont gravées en taille-douce par T. Medland, William Byrne, John Emes, J. Schuman, et accompagnées de légendes en anglais et en français par Tomkins. Exemplaire relié aux armes du marquis de Stafford avec son ex-libris gravé. Quelques rousseurs éparses et reliure épidermée. Rare.

Cm, 28, primo frontespizio calligrafico con vedutina centrale e 72 belle tavole incise in rame, ciascuna accompagnata da due o più carte di testo esplicativo. Solida ed elegante legatura coeva in pieno marocchino rosso, dorso a nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro, piatti con decorazioni e rosoni a secco centrali, dentelles e tagli dorati. Qualche lieve segno d'uso esterno, peraltro esemplare genuino e molto ben conservato. Ex libris nobiliare. Celebre collezione di tavole che raffigurano vedute e scorci di città e paesi italiani. Il frontespizio presenta ancora la data della prima edizione del 1796, ma si tratta della successiva stampa (del 1817) che come è noto riporta la nuova datazione nella carta di dedica iniziale indirizzata alla Regina.

Calligraphic dedicated to the Queen, dated 1817, with engraving. Illustrated with a total of seventy-two engravings by Smith, printed by T. Medland, W. Byrne. W. Byrne & J. Schuman, B. T. Pouncy and others, with captions and descriptive text on separate leaves. Index of plates at front. John 'Warwick' Smith was a British landscape painter. traveled and lived in Italy from 1776-1781 under the patronage of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick. Smith became known as the 'Warwick" or "Italian" Smith. After moving to London in 1807 he exhibited and became a member of the Watercolour Society. He was elected its president for several years. 'His Italian pictures, which he continued to produce for many years after his return to England, are considered Smith's best' (ODNB). ESTC T147454; Lowndes III, 2425. Text in English and French. Boards with wear along edges, chips and rounded at corners. Boards detached but present. One and a half inch chip at head of spine, two inch chip at tail.
