Hardcover. Zustand: g. Fourth edition. Quarto. XCIX, [1], 297, [1]pp. Uncut. Original olive cloth with gold lettering on spine. Remarkable translation of "Ethica" a philosophical treatise written by Benedict de Spinoza. Spinoza's friends published it after his death, in 1677. The main message of the book is that everything is a part of nature. It is one of the most influential and debated works in philosophy. The method of the book is mostly geometrical. Definitions and axioms are stated, and propositions and corollaries are derived from these. Prefaces, teachings, and appendices, written in more traditional prose, break up the Euclidean rigor. Some rubbing along edges of binding. Offsetting on endpapers. Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. Minor and sporadic underlining and annotation in pencil (easily erasable). Binding in overall fair to good, interior in good+ to very good condition.
