First edition, first issue. Illustrated by G. Cattermole and H. K. Brown. 8vo. Original 88 weekly parts, illustrated paper wrappers. Housed in black cloth folding box. London, Chapman and Hall. The very first issue of Master Humphrey's Clock, containing both The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnarby Rudge. The series was an experiment on Dickens' part, who proposed to Chapman at Hall that he write a serial of loosely connected 'essays, tales, adventures, letters from imaginary correspondents, and so forth', that be issued in weekly parts rather than monthly, in order to keep the attention of readers more effectively. The original intention was abandoned when sales for the series began to drop off disastrously, and so by the fourth part, a novel serialisation was begun under the 'well-known title of The Old Curiosity Shop' (Eckel). The novel was necessarily written in a great rush, the original plans for the Clock had to be scrapped, and a new story, equivalent to Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby, made up to reach the printers before his now weekly, rather than monthly deadlines. However, the success of the The Old Curiosity Shop is well documented. Towards the end of the serialisation of the novel, circulation had risen from 70,000 at the beginning of the serial to 100,000. The ending of the story was said to have been so eagerly awaited in America, that when the ship carrying the final part arrived in New York, fans stormed the dock asking the sailors if Little Nell survived. A very good set, minor browning and spotting, creasing, some with wrappers expertly restored, with neat restoration at backstrip, a few with wrappers detached, some soiling to wrappers (particularly parts 7 and 32), parts 51, 60, 66, 69, 80, with three small pinholes through inner margins, parts 51 and 69 with loss to inner margin of one leaf, part 51 with more concentrated chipping including minor loss to leaves and lower wrapper. Gimbel, A49. Eckel. Hatton. House and Storey, The Letters of Charles Dickens. Norman and Jeanne Mackenzie, Dickens A Life.

First US edition in book form of both works. Both were first published together in the UK as Master Humphrey's Clock. They have been gathered here by a collector in the same spirit, the custom-made box reading "Master Humphrey's Clock: 1st US edition". Master Humphrey's Clock was first published in the UK in both weekly and monthly parts from April 1840 to December 1841. In the US, Lea & Blanchard also published it in monthly parts under the same title. The Old Curiosity Shop half of the duo was issued from April 1840 to March 1841, and on its completion they published it in the present format, a separate book form volume on 9 March 1841. This copy is from the collection of the bibliographer Walter Smith, and is illustrated in his bibliography (pp. 156-160). Smith identifies numerous variants of the edition, and describes the features of this copy specifically (calling it a "further variation" on p. 163), without priority of issue. Barnaby Rudge was issued from March to December 1841. On completion it was published in the present separate book-form volume on 20 December 1841, with the title post-dated 1842. It was published simultaneously in cloth and in boards. Walter Smith, First American Editions, pp. 159-164 & 184-6. 2 works, octavo. Original cloth, spines lettered with vignette in gilt. Housed together in brown cloth box. Illustrated throughout. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box; contemporary bookplate of Frederick William Barry to front pastedown of Barnaby Rudge. Very minor sunning and rubbing to cloth, contents a little spotted. Very good copies.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. John Leech; George Cruikshank; Hablot Knight Browne (illustrator). First edition. A smartly rebound collection of Charles Dickens' novels, with 'Sketches of Boz' and 'Christmas Book's being the first cheap editions, all volumes illustrated with a frontispiece. 'Sketches of Boz' is the first cheap edition, published in 1850, and 'Christmas Books' is the first edition of the five collected stories published in one volume, published in 1852. 'Barnaby Rudge' with a frontispiece and four plates by Hablot Knight Browne. "Barnaby Rudge" is a historical novel, set mostly during the Gordon Riots of 1780, and follows the life of Barnaby Rudge, a simple man with a loving mother, in amongst the chaos of the anti-Catholic protests. Browne is often known by his pen name 'Phiz'. He illustrated many of Dickens' books, and became so associated with Dickens, that some of his illustrations were issued as stamps to celebrate the authors two-hundredth birthday in 2012. 'Sketches by Boz' with a frontispiece by George Cruikshank. "Sketches by Boz" is a collection of short stories and scenes concerning London life, which were originally published in various newspapers and periodicals. This volume includes the stories 'A Christmas Carol', 'The Chimes', 'The Cricket on the Hearth', 'The Battle of Life', and 'The Haunted Man'. Erstausgabe
Illus. by George Cattermole and Hablot K. Browne. Orig. olive green cloth, borders blocked in blind, spine with blind compartments and lettered in gilt; a little faded & marked, following hinge splitting, leading inner hinge cracked. A good sound copy. See Smith 6 & 6B. This appears to be a later reissue of the first one-volume edition, using the original stereotyped text block, but with a new titlepage. It contains the ADVERTISEMENT, being a five-line explanation of the erratic pagination (iii), but not the 2pp 'Preface to Barnaby Rudge'. The pagination and internal flaws match those of the first one-volume edition, but the titlepage is undated, and the imprint gives the Chapman & Hall address as 193 Piccadilly, the publisher's address from 1852.
