Cloth, 8vo, 27 cm, xvii, 188 pp, pp of ills, facs. From the blurb: 'I told you, Madam, that you and I were rivals for that great man,' wrote James Boswell in his first letter to Mrs. Thrale in 1769. Mrs. Hyde's subject is the 'impossible friendship' of these two rivals and their relations with Samuel Johnson, in the years between 1763 when Johnson first met Boswell and 1791 when Boswell's Life of Johnson at last appeared. Her book makes use of hitherto unpublished letters and new manuscript material in recording with fascinating and lively detail the amicability which prevailed between Boswell and Mrs. Thrale until her second marriage to the Italian music master Gabriel Piozzi, and their subsequent bitter personal animosity and public warfare. It offers new insights into Johnson himself, the giant bone of contention, as well as into the two larger-than-life-size contenders. In the end, Mrs. Hyde says, if the victory went to Boswell, the sympathy goes to Mrs. Thrale. For while this is a work of masterly scholarship, meticulously documented and annotated, it is also a moving human story, comic and sad by turn and continuously illuminating. When an earlier version of part of the book appeared in the Harvard Library Bulletin, the Times Literary Supplement observed that it was 'a remarkable and an engrossing performance' and that Mrs. Hyde's style, skill and sympathy made it not only required reading for all Johnsonians but also a narrative which would captivate the general reader. The book includes reproductions of manuscripts and of contemporary paintings and drawings." Very Good in a used dustwrapper. which is torn with some loss. Buchnummer des Verkäufers ABE-18028
