'The Blister' was only one year old when she fell for Henry, and from then onwards she was his devoted slave. It was Henry who christened her the Blister. 'You Ruddy Blister!' he yelled, when he discovered she had used his seven prize potatoes for baking in the bonfire and when she nearly lost all her fingers attacking a row of cauliflowers with a badging hook. Henry had been a Sergeant in the Boer War and was the head gardener. Loved and respected by all on the Kentish estate, a complete artist and craftsman, he was the Blister's hero, her adviser and friend. An important occasion or unusual occurence in those early days of the century involved everyone in the neighbourhood. The summer flower shows, the arrival of a strange tribe of gipsies, the planting of the victory oak in the churchyard, all were important and memorable occasions for the whole community. Where Henry was master of the garden, Cookie ruled over her kitchen with kindly but unquestionable authority. As well as being a wonderful cook she also had a remedy for almost any complaint in her own recipe book which she kept padlocked in the kitchen as a precaution against the prying eyes of visiting ladies' maids. Yandell has revealed to us some of her special recipes; Toilet Water made from spring flowers, Imperial Pop, Oyster Powder, and Mousehair Tea (a cure for Whooping Cough).
