Inhaltsangabe: Martin Mooney's poems are darkly comic, muscular, inventive and highly charged. Politics simmer beneath the surface of poems that find their energy in the everyday urban experience, be it work at the shipyards, an early morning fishing expedition, the building of houses, or a visit to the local pub. A patently Irish humor, replete with shadows and irony, informs the poet's observations--and the second part of the collection is a kind of novella through poetry that follows the exploits of a young Irish expatriate and a cast of people on the fringe as they stumble through daily unpleasantries.
Vom Verlag: Martin Mooney was born in Belfast in 1964 and grew up in Newtownards, County Down. In 1982 he went to Queen's University, graduating with a first-class honors degree in English and philosophy in 1986. He spent a number of years working in pubs in north London and is currently living in Belfast and is a member of faculty at the Poet's House at Portmuch in County Antrim. Grub, dealing with political hypocrisy and the nature of creativity and love, is Martin Mooney's debut collection. The poems in Grub form a series of hard-edged satirical parable exploring an eclectic range of subject matter, including Anna Akhmatova's funeral, the Belfast shipyards, body piercing and poll tax evasion. Mooney's poems have appeared in various publications, including Trio 5 (Blackstaff Press, 1987), Map-makers' Colours: New Poets of North Ireland (Nu-Age Editions, 1988 and The New Younger Irish Poets (Blackstaff Press, 1991). His work has also been featured in numerous periodicals and magazines and he has published, Brecht and an Exquisite Corpse: Two Long Poems (Lapwing, 1992) and Escaping with Cuts and Bruises (Honest Ulsterman, 1993. Poetry Ireland called his one of the "most inventive" of the newly emergent voices in Irish poetry.
