Inhaltsangabe: 'The war destroyed forever the social, political and economic structure of pre-war Europe and an entire world of intellectual and economic values. The lights had really gone out all over Europe and it was to be many years before they were relit.' The end of the First World War had left a deep and profound vacuum that stretched right across Europe, spreading an inconsolable feeling of impending disaster in its path. Little over a decade later, when the dark shadows of the economic depression that was to follow fell darkly across the continent, it seemed that the years of foreboding were about to be fulfilled. For the years 1929-33 proved to be perhaps the worst economic depression that the world has faced. In The Great Slump, academic and social historian Goronwy Rees examines the causes and the effects of this widespread economic and financial collapse. Throughout his study he draws on the work of a host of contemporary writings from poets and economists to dramatists and historians. And as he reveals the extent of the depression, he analyses the emergence of new powers that were, in time, to rock the world afresh. AUTHBIO: Welsh academic Goronwy Rees was the author of a number of key works of social and economic history. In recent years it has repeatedly been alleged that Rees was a member of the famous Cambridge ring, recruited into the KGB in the 1930s. Although Rees made no secret of his friendship with KGB-defector Guy Burgess, it appears that his sympathies with communism remained ideological rather than political and that his relationship with the Soviet regime short lived in the extreme.
