Cloth, 8vo, 720 pp. "This first comprehensive selection of Brecht's letters to be published in English, translated by Ralph Manheim and edited by John Willett, is based on Gunter Glaeser's East-West German edition of 1981-3, covering the whole of his adult life from his mid-teens until his death. These letters chart Brecht's private and public preoccupations for over forty years. The volume is divided into five main periods: first, the years before Brecht settled in Berlin, including his first marriage and the First World War; second, the Berlin years up to the start of Hitler's Third Reich, the time of collaboration with Kurt Weill and the shift to militant communism; third, the years of exile which cut Brecht off from the German theatrical and publishing world and took him, with other emigres, halfway round the world to California; fourth, the Second World War, which extended for Brecht until his return to Europe in 1947; finally, his last nine years, covering his brief interlude in Switzerland and the period in East Berlin with his historic campaign to rebuild the German-language theatre. 'For anybody concerned with the development of post-war Germany on the one hand, or that of the arts on the other,' writes John Willett, 'there is a fascinating story here: the persistence of Brecht's intention, however his country might evolve, to act as a messenger from the avant-garde theatre before Hitler to the culture of our second half-century.' This major new volume of personal correspondence offers invaluable insights into the mind and life of one of the century's most influential and controversial figures." - from the blurb. Page edges age-toned, otherwise Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper. Buchnummer des Verkäufers ABE-05875
