Reseña del editor:
Several major photography institutions and public collections in the Netherlands are currently putting together a broad thematic retrospective of Dutch photography. "Dutch Eyes" provides a highly variegated picture of developments, events, phenomena and people in the photography of the Netherlands from about 1840 to the present, related to the sociological, economic, social, technological and cultural context of their time. The book is arranged thematically around 10 broad concepts. These themes are often centred in a given period, but present substantive leads for elaborating connections to the developments in the past and present as well. The book therefore does not follow a strict chronological line, but rather covers topics that are also inter-related. The chapters are in many cases divided into subchapters, resulting in comprehensive, coherent articles. Where necessary, sidebar texts, which can also be read separately, are devoted to particular people, phenomena or institutions throughout the chapters. The most important aspect of the book is the photographs themselves: the most beautiful, most exciting and most evocative photographs (more than 500 in total) from prominent Dutch collections are printed in excellent quality.
Contraportada:
Do Dutch eyes look differently? Is there such a thing as specifically Dutch photography? What is the character of the rich photographic tradition of the Netherlands and of the national photographic climate? These questions have become all the more pressing since so much international attention has been devoted to Dutch photography. Until now, the history of photography in the Netherlands has been described only in part.
Dutch Eyes: A Critical History of Photography in the Netherlands paints a vivid picture of developments, events and key figures in Dutch photography from 1839 to the present day, within their social, economic, technological, cultural and historical context. The book is organised around ten themes, including photography and the city, engagement, colonial photography and the perception of the 'other', the landscape, the photobook as a collaborative project and the relationship between photography and art. These themes focus partly on particular periods, yet at the same time provide starting points for tracing the course of developments in the past and interpreting modern advances. The book does not therefore follow a strictly chronological order, but largely discusses subjects within a thematic context. The chapters are punctuated by box texts about influential photographers, exhibitions, remarkable techniques, photojournalism, photography magazines and publishers.
The book contains over six hundred superb photographs by more than two hundred photographers. The best works have been selected from the most important Dutch photography collections, including the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, the Print Room of Leiden University Library and the Amsterdam City Archives. This publication is an invaluable source of information and enjoyment for anyone interested in photography and visual culture.
