The Partition of India cast its lengthy shadows on two generations of the subcontinent. Ordinary people across borders were sucked into its vortex as unconscious and innocent actors, as maddened mobs. Drawing on short stories, poems, satirical writings, eye-witness accounts, and interviews, these two volumes document the anguish and sense of betrayal at the freedom gained. Currently the director-general of National Archives of India, Professor Mushirul Hasan is one of India's most erudite and prolific historians.
