A Short History of Chess by HJR Murray - Softcover

Among the papers left by the late H. J. R. Murray was the typeset of A Short History of Chess which he wrote in 1917. This was not an abridgment of the standard work he had published some years earlier but a new and original brief history of the game from its beginnings until 1866. It has been brought up to date by Mr. B. Goulding Brown and Mr. Harry Golombek.

Harold James Ruthven Murray was born on 24 June 1868. His first book A History of Chess was published by Oxford University Press in 1913. Murray covered the first 1,400 years of the game's history in definitive detail. He died on 16 May 1955. He left several more manuscripts which are being held by Oxford University. Harry Golombek OBE was born 1 March 1911. He was a British chess International Master and honorary grandmaster, chess arbiter, and chess author. He was three times British Chess Champion, in 1947, 1949 and 1955. He became a grandmaster in 1985. He died on 7 January 1995. Bertram Goulding Brown was a tournament chess player and a contributor to British Chess Magazine. He was born 5 July 1881 and died 22 August 1965 in the United Kingdom.
