Over the last two decades, alongside his better known sculptural work, German artist Thomas Schütte (born 1954) has created watercolors and drawings of his acquaintances and friends, as well as numerous self-portraits (such as the Mirror Drawings). These drawings are often created in series, as Schütte approaches the same subject over and over, obsessively covering all angles and methodically exhausting the possibilities. Schütte's drawings directly inform his sculptural portraits, which are created in a similar spirit. With 130 color reproductions, Faces and Figures offers a selective, themed Schütte retrospective, surveying these portraits and other works on paper, as well as ceramic and bronze sculptures--including the impressive "Vater Staat" (Father State), a towering steel figure that despite its scale appears frail and isolate.

November 1954 in Oldenburg) ist ein deutscher Bildhauer und Zeichner. Schütte studierte von 1973 bis 1981 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Fritz Schwegler und Gerhard Richter. Er zeigt in seinen Werken eine große Vielseitigkeit. Sowohl bei den verwendeten Techniken als auch bei der Formgebung entziehen sich seine Arbeiten weitgehend allen Festlegungen. Es gibt von Schütte Architekturmodelle wie die Ferienhäuser für Terroristen, daneben auch Radierungen und voluminöse Plastiken. Sein Auftritt bei der Kunstbiennale Venedig 2005 stellt einen Höhepunkt seiner Karriere dar, da er mit dem Preis für den besten Künstler der Ausstellung ausgezeichnet wurde. Ende 2007 wurde das Werk Model for a Hotel 2007 Schüttes aus farbigen Glasplatten für den vierten Pfeiler des Trafalgar Square ausgewählt. . With United Enemies, figures are not modeled in isolation but are bound in pairs, emerging in parallel. They are presented without hair or other embellishments, enabling the artist (and the viewer) to focus on the individual character of each figure.
