In the early 19th century the publication of such books as Du Sommerard's Les Arts au Moyen Age played a crucial role in the dissemination of interest in the Middle Ages, leading, during the second half of the century, to the building up of important private and public collections in Europe and America. Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza's collection of Medieval sculpture and works of art, begun by his father, is representative of this tradition. Wide-ranging in its scope, it includes fine Gothic sculptures on a large and small scale, ivories and enamels from major European centres, and works of art in other media. In this catalogue every object is illustrated in full colour, often with several different views, and there are many illustrations of comparative material. The author, Paul Williamson, in addition to discussing the pieces themselves in detail, also addresses himself to wider issues of interest to the student of Medieval art. In a lengthy introduction, the author writes two informative essays: one on the collecting of Medieval works of art and the other on the materials and techniques of the Medieval artist.
