To mark the fifth anniversary of the 1987 hurricane, this weather book has been written for the county of Essex. The fourth in the "County Weather" series, this book contains stories of all the dramatic weather events, including whirlwinds, earthquakes, tornadoes, fogs, dust-devils, water spouts, glaze, twisters and even ice floes. The story of the great Essex earthquake of 1884, the Siberian-like blizzards of 1947 and 1963, and the "surprise" thunderstorms of 1958 and 1968 are featured along with historic photographs. Most of the content is devoted to events of the 20th century. Essex has the reputation of being the driest county of England, with more than its share of icy blasts and thundery days, but the North Sea has brought, and will always bring, the greatest suffering. The floods of 1953 - covered by 30 photographs - were especially severe, when 113 Essex people perished as tidal waters overtopped miles of defences, and the attention of the world was focused on the beleaguered county.
