The three stories included in this edition are brilliant examples of Saki's wit and ingenuity. The Secret Sin of Septimus Brope and Sredni Vashtar (a large polecat ferret), both first appeared in the short story collection The Chronicles of Clovis (1912). The Lumber Room, an account of a young boy's escape from the domineering authority of his bossy aunts, was published 2 years later in Saki's popular collection entitled Beasts and Super-Beasts.

Saki (1870-1916) Hector Hugh Munro, alias Saki, was one of the most accomplished short story writers in the English language. He was born in Burma, but was sent to live in England with his aunts and grandmother at the age of 2, following the death of his mother. He initially joined the colonial service, and later worked as a journalist and foreign correspondent. He was killed in action in the First World War.
