Thurman was a member of the 3rd Missouri Infantry, Missouri State Guard while in high school. Joe became a merchant seaman. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was sent to Japan in 1947. Joe remained in the army for 29 years and retired as a chief warrant officer in 1975.
Sherman obtained her juris doctorate in 1980. She was a career prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
