"Sillery is not merely a storyteller, but a historian as well."
-Renee Peck, New Orleans Times-Picayune
As the home of ancestral Indians and the site of Civil War battles, the Magnolia State possesses a rich past that fuels the haunted lore of the present. In this ghostly guide, Barbara Sillery delves into the legends and myths, tracking the homes where spirits still roam. She interviews witnesses and reveals vivid firsthand accounts of paranormal activity. A short history of each site and its ghostly inhabitants adds to the mysterious allure of these locales.
Twenty-four bone-chilling chapters profile the cavorting spirits and their often-frightening antics. At McRaven House, two spiteful specters are known to smack guests without warning. The ghosts at Cedar Grove Inn break glasses, slam doors, and smoke cigars. A restless couple at Anchuca want out of the attic and set off an indoor waterfall. Longwood's lonely master startles visitors, and Greenville's lost ghost remains on guard duty at the former armory. King's Tavern, Magnolia Hall, Merrehope, Rowan Oak, Linden, Mount Holly, Stanton Hall, Beauvoir, Glenburnie, the Lyric Theatre, the Old Capitol Museum, Rosedale, and Waverley all have tales to tell and lively spirits who will not lie still.
Barbara Sillery is a television producer and writer. She is the president and owner of Lagniappe Media, Inc., a television production company that specializes in cultural documentaries for PBS affiliates. In addition to interviewing celebrities such as Hilary Swank, Jane Fonda, Jamie Foxx, and Anne Rice as a field producer for Extra, the syndicated entertainment show, Sillery has contributed articles to La Vie, Louisiana Cultural Vistas, and Native Peoples magazines. Her accolades include the International WordFest Award, several Telly Awards, and New Orleans Press Club awards, as well as a recognition from PBS and the American Association for State and Local History. She is the author of The Haunting of Louisiana, also from Pelican. Sillery earned a B.A. in theater and speech from Marywood University. She lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
